I've had him for over a week now, but he won't let me hold him. The people at petsmart say wait 1-2 days, but that hasn't worked. He lets me pet him alittle, but that's it. Is there something wrong with him? or is it me?

Well here's the thing my hamster was the same way, I gave her a week an she wouldn't let me pick her up so just give her more time and my suggestion is do what I did, when you put your hands in the cage before you do wash your hands then grab some shavings and act like your washing your hands with'em... it may sound stupid but the thing is it'll give your hands the scent of shavings something that is rather familiar with her...

give it sometime when you do this when you put your hand in the cage be sure to let her sniff you and if she wants to walk on you (be warned she may try to bite but hamsters don't mean it they only do that to see if your edible) if she does walk on you DO NOT PICK HER UP, your just going to scare him... and he may turn on his side (which is a bad thing cause it's there way of playing dead at which point in time if your hamster does so then put him back in the cage....)

I hope this helps and if you want to check out our site be sure to do so we have mention of our pets and we're going to be upgrading the our pets portion and give tips and information about both mice and hamsters... plus if you have any questions in regards to hamsters please don't hesitate to contact me or my wife (since the husband is typing this) our emails are on the site and we both know a ton in a half about mice an hamsters...

The people at the store lied.
Hamsters are mean.
They bite and even hiss.
I work at a pet store.
If you want to hold him.
Buy one of those roll balls and put him in there every day.
For a couple days then try to hold him.
I suggest with a small hand towel because they can and will bite.
The best pet that you can hold is a rabbit, chinchilla, guinea pig pr Fancy rats.

Nothing wrong, hamsters are very hard to 'win over'. My sister & I had them all the time when we were younger and one hamster would be calm as can be and like being held...and others were like speedy gonzales and they'd jump around and run all the time. It just depends on their personality. The more you try to pet him the better though - that way he'll be used to you and trust you. Try using treats to coax him towards you too. They LOVE celery!

Nope, I have two hamsters that won't let me hold them at all, and I've had them for six months. Hamsters don't really like us, because we're so big to them, also try to not have lotion or something like that on your hands, they are sensitive to the smell.

It took about two weeks for me to hold my hamster before it stopped trying to bite me. Now I just reach in and get her and hold her. She does try to get away--they like to be on the move at all times. That doesn't mean they don't like you. She's probably afraid.

when i got my Hammy, he was very good-natured, so he let me hold him almost instntly.
what i think is your new hamster may be a little scared or imtimidated by your scent. the soulution is easy, wear gloves.
not the winter ones, just the cheap wool ones.
your hammy will be fine!
good luck!

He just needs to be conditioned. Be patient with him, but persistent. Be sure to feed him well before picking him up (he will be more content and less likely to bite). I am sure he will get used to you in time. But if you ever stop picking him up routinely, he will become scared and aggressive.

Good luck.
