Before the Earth existed? It depends on your location. The most obvious answer would be "vacuous space," but of course there'd be dust and debris sprinkled around. You would probably see the light from other stars, but because this spans over all the times before Earth formed, it might be too early for the light to reach us.

Considering that this is a "philosophy" question, I think the real issue is whether there would be anything: because is there a past? What is time? Personally, I would say it's the measurement of events/change, so going back would mean that there just *isn't* anything. Poof. Nada. =)

It depends on where and when in the universe I am... The age of the universe is 13.7 billion years old, and Earth is only about 4.5 billion years old. If I were in this part of the universe, I'd probably die as I watched our sun begin to form.

But if I could travel to before the universe existed.. I think I would just see nothing?

I think it would be dark but I would know that God was right there beside me. And I wouldn't be afraid. I would be able to see God and know the awesome power that he holds and the ability to see heaven before anybody else would be just unbelievable but I would believe it because I would be standing in the middle of it.

How far before?
Just before and you would see a large amount of energy expanding.
Before that you would see the former universe collapsing into a small ball of energy.
Before that you would see the former universe that existed on our brane(the area our universe is located as explained by string theory) before we bumped into another one.

The christians would have us believe that we would see god, around 5 years old, constructing the earth out of tinker toys and legos. I might be paraphrasing but it sounds plausible. Doesn't it?

Soon before would be lots of very hot stellar dust, a young sun, and myself expanding. Then I die.
