I have liver problems, which causes me to itch all over and feel generally restless. For the last 2 weeks I have slept on the sofa, I cannot bring myself to get in bed. I think its because when I get in bed and cannot sleep I get more restless and hot and itchy and stressed and dont sleep. I dont seem to get this when I sleep on the sofa. I cant sleep on the sofa forever!! How do I get back to bed without stressing myself out?

Oddly enough, when I was sick, I too, could only sleep on the couch. I would try to get rid of the anxiety about not sleeping in bed by just lying in it in the middle of the day and possible try to take a nap (I know this sounds bad, but take something to knock you out). Then, when it's bed time (NOT the same day you try to nap in the bed), line pillows up along your wall to mimic the couch. What I loved about sleeping on it when I was sick was the feeling of being hugged and the firmness of it...

Make your bed a haven. Change the sheets, have a bath, put on clean nightclothes, make a cup of something soothing and take the radio or a not-too-heavy-going book. Plan to be asleep in one hour, and if your not it doesnt matter, just get up for half an hour then try again. If you still cant sleep go back to the sofa. Keep on trying each night to stay a little longer in bed (but ya dont need to do all the comfort stuff each night!)

Try putting a fan in your room. This will not only cure the hot part (which may contribute to itchy) but also the white noise may help you to sleep. You could also try a radio or tv in your room. Also try to get yourself into a bedtime routine. Don't just go to bed and try to sleep. Have a cup of hot tea or chocolate and read for a little while every night before bed - help your mind to relax. Just some suggestions - I hope they help!

Put sheets and blankets on the bed. Get the room as cool as you can without actually frezzing to death (easy to do at this time of year!) but you do want the room cold (ish). Lay on the bed with all the covers put off you but where you can get hold of them one at a time. Have your head on nice soft, comfortable pillows (feather down ones are best). You will start to feel a bit cold. Pull up just the sheet over you. Then, as you will still feel a bit cold, after a few minutes (4 or 5) pull one of the blankets over you. Keep doing this until you start feeling warm, and push one of the blankets back off you again. Keep doing this and you will suddenly wake up the next morning without even realising you went to sleep. HTH LOL

You need to take this problem to your doctor. Disturbed sleep will seriously damage your health, both mentally and physically, and when you rest on the sofa, you get less of the deep sleep you need to stay healthy. Your doctor will have seen this problem in other patients with liver problems and will know how to advise you best.

Your bed has now become a place to dread due to the discomfort you feel. Make sure you are sleeping on sheets cleaned with non scented soap and if you use softner get non scented. I dont know how old you are, but see maybe seeing your doctor about sleeping pills for a week or two to get thru it.

I wish you well,

Use the same bed clothes, cover that you use when sleeping on the sofa.

You may be getting too hot when in bed.

You could psychologically be associating the bedroom and your bed with a life threatening experience. Maybe switching your living room and bedroom around would improve this.

i don't have the liver problems but other health problems also make sleeping on the sofa a better option for me at times. i think you might find i a bit more comfortable in bed if you prop yourself up more with extra pillows. some times it helps. good luck and i hope you find your answer soon

think about what's different about the sofa - do you have less sheets? maybe if you changed to light cotton sheets it would help? might be that you've connected you're bed with itching in your head and it's become a self fulfilling prophecy. changing something about it may help psychologically get you back in bed (or physically!).

worth a try xxx

It may be that because you are afraid if itching and thinking about it> if you can move your bed to a new possition or buy some new covers this may help> you must train your mind!! Or maybe I give you a little cuddle!!
