Planes fly up so high that the air is very thin.

If for any reason the cabin was damaged, or the planes air system was inoperable, you would not be able to breathe without the oxygen.

Atmospheric pressure at sea level is 14.7 PSI. Above ten thousand feet the air pressure is lower than the pressure required for us humans to breath. Around 30,000 feet where commercial airliners fly, you cannot breath. So, compressed oxygen is required. In the event that cabin pressure inside the aircraft falls below 14.7 PSI, you will need to breath out of the mask to live.

If there is a loss of cabin pressure at 35k ft., guess what?? No air! So they put some oxygen masks in there. However, what they don't tell you is that your head will feel like it's exploding.
