I do not see my deafness as ahandicap but I do see my fear of hieghts as one as it stops me from doing things. I believe everybody has a handicap which is not necessarily a physical one. What would you classify as your handicap ?

You know, you raise a good point. I guess in today's society that we classify anything outside the "norm" as a handicap. I agree that psychological handicaps are worse than physical ones. For example, with your deafness, you learned sign language and such. With people that are wheel chair bound or blind, there are service dogs that help and most don't see their ailment as a handicap. I think that anxiety and phobias are more crippling. Me personally, i think my depression would be my handicap. There are days when I don't even get out of bed. But luckily, I have found ways to overcome that, My dogs mostly. They won't let me stay in bed. They get me up and get me outside in the sunshine and fresh air and I feel better.

Edit: To the first poster, that was completely inappropriate and you were just reported. There was no need to display the rude hand gesture.

I'm afraid like most things in society it's down to what the government determines a handicap - thus setting out employment law and legislation, benefits etc. They set the criteria for this and in fact disabilty is currently being redefined in UK emloyment law to include things such as anxiety attacks. Some people will be offended to know that legally theu have a handicap in the eyes of the law when they themselves do not consider this to be the case. Your own explaination is of course logical, whereas the law and legislation can sometimes be so wrapped up in red tape its bordering on the ludicrous.

Physical handicap as you put it is all what you say and you dont have to have signs and still be Disabled so people judge before knowing the real facts of people.
I am Disabled and have spine troubles and cannot walk without pain but i tolerate it and if it was not for my stick people would not know. but i wont get better again and will end up in a wheel chair. im to proud to let people see this and why I dont like it.
