I am moving to Egypt in 5 weeks and keep coming up with questions I need help finding answers to. lol This is my 3rd question: Are the outlets the same as in America? for example, do I have to get a converter to plug my hair dryer into before I plug it into the wall at a house in Egypt (I've heard you have to do that in England).

you will need an converter and an adapter. If you use just an adapter most appliences will burn out or possibly cause fire or explosion. You can wait and buy it from radio shack in Egypt or you can buy it in the US but it costs about the same price. You might be better off just buying new appliances there unless the applience is really expensive. They have pretty much everything there so you are not likely to miss out on any modern convenience. Don't bother bringing cell phones unless they are GMS or they won't work at all besides cell phones aren't terribly expensive to purchase there and service is purchased differently than here. Computer equipment is pricey there so you should bring computer stuff with you. Your life will be alot easier if you just sell things you own here and purchase them there. You wont have to dink around with converters and adapters. The only thing you can really use adapters with are things like laptops that have a power regulator built into the cord, and even then I'd recommend a converter just to be safe.

It is easy to buy an adapter from a three socket outlet to a two socket outlet, but the trick is the voltage in Egypt it is 220 while in the USA it is 110. You can get a transformer, which comes in Watts. This will not work though for your hair dryer which usually has a very high watt like 800 watts or more, for that you will need a big and heavy transformer. So my advice is, take with you the appliances that need a low watt, for a hair dryer, better get one that works on 220 volts.

Hi, In England there are 3 sockets, whereas in Egypt there is only two. You will have to buy some of those travel adapters, plug your hair dryer into the adapter thing and then plug the adapter into the socket in the wall..
Once you've settled down in to Egypt you may decide to buy another hairdryer, because of all the appliances needing a socket..your gonna have to buy quite a few adapters...

God bless and have a nice time in Egypt..!! xx

I'm with the first answer and I add there is no earth connection and you can find converters and adaptors in Egypt if you forget to bring any. Check your devices as most can work with 110/220. No problem to ask many questions, go on and ask more but save some points till you arrive in Egypt.

The electricity current is 220 volts, so you do need to bring a converter. The outlets are two-hole round pins, like this:

so you'll need to bring a plug adapter as well.

Some hair dryers are equipped with a 110/220 switch.
