You wish for what you desire. And hope that it will come true.

While hopes and wishes tend to be regarded in positive lights, they also have their dark elements. I have seen many people waste months and years of life hoping to get back with old loves. (Wishes here are more harmless.) Some hopes should be let go.

I have also seen many people wish for months and years that their jobs, relationships, or lives could be different, and yet take no action to change them. This kind of wishing is often coupled with passivity, inaction, powerlessness, and perhaps a lack of knowledge of how they can change their situations, as well as the courage to attempt it. Many wishes should be grasped and put into action.

It is my belief that we need to value wisdom the most, in order to help us distinguish which hopes and wishes we should cherish, and which we should let go of.

If you are merely talking about linguistic differences, the first poster Arby is probably the most accurate.

I teach English language part-time, and the grammar texts I've seen generally distinguish the difference as Arby did:

Want = possible, likely expectation,
outcome partially/fully in speaker's control,
Hope = possible expectation,
outcome out of the speaker's control
Wish = unlikely, nearly impossible expectation

Notice the difference in connotation:
"I want world peace."
The speaker believes world peace is possible, and sounds like s/he will take some action to help achieve that outcome.
"I hope for world peace".
The speaker feels world peace is possible, but less likely, and may still act, but still feels his/her actions will have little effect on the outcome.
"I wish for world peace".
The speaker thinks world peace is distant and unlikely, and will probably take little or no action.

Another common category for wishes is when you wish somebody a "happy birthday" or "good luck." These are more like "blessings", rather than statements of nearly impossible expectations.

I hope for, and wish you the best

A hope is a desire of something, but a wish is an expression of it in words. The words as verbs are the same.

you can wish for whatever you like and then hope that your wish gets granted depending on how realistic your wish is.

wish = you would like
hope = you think you will get what you want / achieve what you set out

Use ‘wish’ in situations, which are imagined, or hypothetical.
Use ‘hope’ when there is hope (a chance) for something to happen.

yes. hope has optimism. wish involves doubt. if you wish something would happen, you are preparing yourself for the possibility that it won't. "i wish i had a million dollars" - it means you don't have it yet, and you're not doing anything to get it. "i hope i have a million dollars" - this means that you're putting forth an active plan that you have faith will fly and earn you a million dollars. hoping involves faith in something, wishing doesn't.

that's a tough one but i think the best comparison might be between love and lust. hope is more from the heart while wish is something more ummm not form the heart? a wish is something that you want to happen, while a hope is something you truly would need.

Yes hope gives you a chance and a wish will diminish your chance at hope. Wishing is something that you would like to happen but hope will happen. Hope is like faith. Faith will keep that hope alive.

Wishing is spontaneous; you can wish for anything anytime, while hope is frustrating; because you have to wait!0!
