My husband and I are looking to buy a house in the next three years. But we have some constraints: 1. we want to take advantage of some of teh programs that are out there to help you buy a home, 2. we havent saved up enough as yet, but we are just at the beginning, 3. my husbands credit is good/okay, mine is not good, 3. we need to be no more than 1.5 to 2 hours away form the city and 3. we need to be someplace where there is diversity and where we can find a muslim school.

I've been looking but the only places that hit most of the criterias, is out of our price range. Is there someplace I am missing? Any advice?

Orange County NY will have homes in your pricerange. If being close to NYC is your only criteria then consider New Jersey too. There are neighborhoods that are 1.5 hour train rides into NYC where you can easily get a home for 450K. In fact, you can even get a home for that price in Essex County NJ.

You can buy a really nice house in most of New York State for that kind of money. Anywhere North or West of Poughkeepsie.

But within 100 miles of NYC, it's tough to find something really nice for that money.
