I know about the chromosome # 21 that causes this, but what is it that makes them look alike even though they have different parents?

I don't know, but my guess is that it's a genetic feature very closely correlated with the condition. To extend your analogy, just as there are people with blonde hair or blue eyes who have different parents, so too might the look of a Down Syndrome person be as distinct and clear.

The craniofacial bones are smaller than normal and the addition of that extra chromosome 21 seems to cause specific facial fetures as well.

I beg to differ.....yes there are certain physical characteristics that are common with DS ie: almond shaped eyes, broader nose, large tongue to name a few...BUT children that have DS are just like any other child; they inherit their appearances from their parents just like you did. it is no different. also the characteristics of DS are not always obvious. nor are they distortions (bad choice of words there Michael B!) and they do not have similar "mental retardation" hanntastic (there are many different levels of developmental delay with DS.....mild, moderate, severe and all the levels in between though there are no clear and concise ways of measuring it at this time, studies are still being done)

Down syndrome causes multiple abnormalities, and one of them is a particular distortion of the face. The appearance used to be called "Mongolism." This appearance makes them all appear somewhat similar to each other and less like their parents.
