For laptops to be as fast as a pc they would have to be bigger. As for a good laptop there are some really good cheap ones on ebay. I got mine there and it plays DVDs with no ghosting and good sound and it is about 6 years old. Any laptop you buy new now will definately work well.(My laptop is a IBM if you want a good brand name.)

There are many Lenovo IBM laptops for desktop replacement that will do great for your demands. Some Dells' too, they have good warranty and service... Another thing, if you are looking for a desktop replacement I am thinking that you will have it on a desk where you can just use it, but if you plan on moving around laptop-desktop replacement come pretty heavy.

BTW, why aren't there 3.0Ghz laptops? Well, PC's can have it because they can cool it. A laptop doesn't have much space to cool a 3.0ghz "yet". Pretty soon they will invent a processor 3.0ghz that will not over heat inside a small laptop case. Thats the trend with this technologies

I guess the main reason laptops are slower than desktops is because desktop PC casings have more room to work with, while the Laptop casing is far more compact, and presumably it takes a little while longer to shrink the newer technology so it'll all fit and / or become developped enough to do so without going into a sort of "nuclear meltdown" or affect the battery-life.

Your best bet for a fast desktop replacement laptop would be the ALIENWARE range @ http://www.alienware.com
