drugs-(euphemistically called "meds") as a pathetic substitute for what a soul truly needs-nurturing and loving kindness-which would go a long way at genuine healing!!!!!

Hey, if so many Americans (or our whole "pop-a-pill" society) are really so "nurturing" and "lovingly kind," you should send one over here. Because in my experience, no one and no thing has ever been so flawless and perfect and wonderful that I would depend on it for my happiness. And very few human beings anywhere are without bias and hate and that tendency to "do what's best" for others while ignoring the fact that it's not what's best.

And I would rather have people take meds and make something of themselves rather than waste their lives away miserably, living with their verbally abusive parents or s.hitty husbands who claim to "care so much."

That said, alternative therapies for depression - such as yoga, meditation, and exercise - are often as effective as medication.

I come from a family with anxiety; anywhere from severe to mild. I find that I'm able to cope with it without medications and with the help of a support group. Other members of my family are on meds and yet others turn to illegal substances to cope.

I agree that this society needs 'hugs not drugs', but I would rather have someone turn to a controlled substance that is government monitored than to an illegal drug that could contain any number of brain killing chemicals.

Well, Dear Salsa: yours is a very refreshing departure from the usual questions which don't deal with the "real issues". We're living in a culture that esteems psychopathic behavior, and unwise choices and methods re "lifestyles". One can only hope that "the light will dawn" one day, and pursuing conscious and healthy living will become more prevalent. And, that our "leadership" will not be composed of complete criminals..

In the meantime a small but growing minority seeks other paths and ways. See for example http://worldofsouls.com and http://spiritmythos.org for some kindred support. Good luck!!

I personally don't understand the need to compare Carter to Bush II. It's like comparing the Royals to the Pirates, and asking who's better? Who cares - they both sucked. The only reason Bush was re-elected was that the Dem's couldn't even offer a better alternative. If Bush is so bad, imagine what Kerry would have been!! ____________________________ Saw Jimmy Carter on the "Daily Show" last night with Jon Stewart. Never agreed with his politics, but he does have a great wit about him now. It was a pleasure to watch him, and I may even read his book.

They should just let everyone smoke weed! That would cure alot of problems and have rare side effects !! Its so funny I saw this commercial on TV and the parent actor said he just got done talking to his child about the dangers of smoking weed.
He didnt say anything about alcohol or the hardcore drugs !
My dad is taking about 15 different prescriptions and all he really needs is to smoke weed ! Now he has to worry about 15 different side effects.... CRAZY!!!

I work in a pediatricians office and the amount of parents that depend on ADD meds is outragous....Usually when the parents call in because their children are out of meds and they "need a script NOW!!" all I can think is "maybe it is you that has the problem."

Instead of working with their children, and teaching them responsible behaviors, many parents take the easy way out, by drugging up their kids.

That way their sorry asses don't have to worry about dealing with little Johnnys' childish behaviors.

Truly sad times we live in...

I hate it when we have senators and presidents talking about our citizens getting access to their drugs. Makes me believe they're all bought off and promoting meds for profit.

We need medicine for a lot of things and drugs are absolutely the least of our problems.
