I have been deaf all my life and I cant say that it has had any negative impact on me until recently. My Boss now has insinuated that it could be a problem for me in my job ( I`m in Sales)

I have no problem explaining to people that I need them to look at me when they talk so that I can lip-read them and they seem to have no problem in doing it for me. I have been in the job for over 2 years and it only now seems to be an issue.

I beleive its because I need time off to have another Operation on my ears. This will actually improve things so wheres the problem.?

I always thought a handicapp was when you werent able to do things because of your disability. My inability to hear has never stopped me from doing anything.

hi i am profoundly deaf, i know what you mean by you do not have a disability, however deafness is classed as one.
i do not have any other problems apart from the fact i cannot hear! it was very wrong of your boss to address this situation now! it does not affect the way you work, and i know this for a fact!deafness if not like most disabilities,it does not stop you doing anything.we can even play music if we wanted to (and no you don't need hearing..completely deaf people can do this!)

there is nothing anyone can do for my hearing (unlike yourself) but this hasn't stopped me doing anything.
what I'm trying to say is that it is a disability as we do not have the ability to hear, but we are not disabled. (if that makes sense)

make sure you sort your boss out if you get sacked after 2 years..you will get a good case against it as unfair dismissal.

good luck

Only a person who has been deaf all their life I think would be of the same opinion as yourself.

I would consider a loss of hearing a handicap for someone who once had hearing

Not being able to hear a warning of danger such as Watch Out could most definitely cause further handicap.

Someone who can hear the sounds of music, or the sound of wind, the ocean, or rainfall is a wonderful thing - if I went from hearing to non hearing I would consider not being able to hear a handicap. It wouldn't stop me cooking and feeding myself but I may not hear the smoke alarm.

Perhaps your boss also thinks that you may get disheartened if it doesn't work out.

Wether you like it or not deafness is a handicap one you have obviously learned to deal with but a handicap never the less. If this has never been a problem untill now it seems your boss could be in the wrong find out where you stand legally you cannot be victimised in the work place good luck.

Deafness is a handicap.

The first point i want to make is that you have been deaf all your life, you dont know what its like to hear. And having to make that extra effort I.E. explaining that you have to read your lips though not that much out of your way is still something extra that you have to do, more than a normal person. Which is why its called a "handicap"

my dads little d deaf. it is a problem. and its often over looked. he has trouble in large social setting because his hear magnifies all the voices equally.

many cinemas and public buildings (including a community center that was recently built locally specifically for disabled people) dont have a hearing loop meaning he cant here programs, films and speakers.

if you don't find it a handicap you are either very lucky, or a dam fool.

it is a type of handicap you need people to look at you in order to communicte w/ the hearing.my husband is deaf and works in a hearing world and everything in our house is very loud!sounds to me your boss has issues if he continues well that is harrassment and discrimination! just remember to hear is a world of alot of noise my husband does real well considering he has taught himself to play the guitar and sings quite well alittle off key at times but otherwise we enjoy it. good for you though being in a hearing world and in sales as well, wow!!! people are ignorant about deaf people alot think your stupid i for one have known some really intelligent people who just happen to be deaf.

Impressive. I couldn't sell quarters for nickles. How are your numbers? Could your boss be looking for an excuse to get rid of you? Regardless, I wouldn't worry about it. A good salesperson can get a better job more easily than just about any other kind of employee. If he's idiot enough to let you go, he doesn't deserve you!

it sounds like ur boss is just worried about money and doesnt care about employees. u could sue him if he fired u over that. its called discrimination. and ive met deaf ppl and there isnt anything wrong w/them except they cant hear. they can still dance tho which is really cool. good luck w/ur boss. he sounds pretty crappy.

deafness is not normal. you have ears to hear, and if they don't work...you're handicapped. just because you have a handicap doesn't mean you cannot work or do almost whatever else it is that you want to do.
