It was founded in 1994 and began in 1996 by Tony George. They use mainly oval tracks but in 2005 intro'd some road courses (I don't like these much). They currently race the Indy 500 as one of the stops on their schedule. Historically they had several engine manufacturers but last year switched to Honda only until 2009 (which I don't like). Some people think it is dominated by foreign drivers however, only three out of the 10 champions have been foreign. Some popular drivers are Sam Hornish Jr., Danica Patrick, Tony kannan and Dan Wheldon.

It is so much fun to watch and even more fun to attend. It is one of the most exciting things you will see. Good luck.

Here are a couple of links to sites that should provide you a lot of valuable and timely information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indy_Racing_League

http://www.indycar.com/

The wiki article is particularly good. It gives a pretty good history of the Indy Racing League along with lots of interesting information. The other site is the official IRL website.

Good luck with your search for information.
