If I have a file that is 10G and from experience I know that it can be compressed to 4G using gzip, do I need more than 4G of free disk space to do this? Or does gzip make use of temporary files that are erased when it is done???

The version of gzip that I use will put any temporary files (if there even are some) on the drive that it is zipping TO, not from.

I couldn't find an answer but in general you need 10g more temporarily, then that collapses to 4gb for the new file (if it works like other compression programs).
