One of the biggest things to remember is that often times those who audition pick songs that everyone else is singing and sadly fall into the background. It sounds like you have a wonderful powerhouse of a voice and you need a song that reflects that.

Look at some of the classics - even semi-religious songs. When I think "big ol' black woman' I get a mental picture of a high-spirited, the spirit is a flowing gospel number. Choose something that accentuates your voice and that you can relate to.

I wish I could offer more help, but really it all comes down to your life experiences and the types of music that move you. You need to pick a song that expresses yourself. That emphasizes an experience you have been through. You'll be amazed at what that can do for a vocal performance.

Singing is 15% lyrics, 30% pitch and 55% soul.

SAD or ROCK? Okay.. I'm not sure on that. If by sad you mean.... slow and kind of emo... Evanescence has lots of these, as well as rock, such as: Hello Like You My Immortal Your Star Missing All That I'm Living For Sweet Sacrifice Weight of the World Going Under The Veronicas: All I Have Heavily Broken In Another Life Someone Wake Me Up My Chemical Romance has lots of good rock songs, and so does Switchfoot.

PLEASE TAKE THIS ADVICE!

okay, have you every heard the song "Brat Pack" (weird name , right?) by The Rocket Summer. It's a pop/rock song with a little show tune feel. I fell in love with it, and almost everyone I know loves that song too. If you live in a small town, I'm sure most people will relate to it. I don't know if I can explain how great it is, but you should really consider checking it out.

:)
