Don't worry about choosing a career path. I went to college straight out of high school, thinking that I knew what I wanted to do with my life. When I realized that I had been wrong, I quit college, 3 years and about $13,000 in loans later. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up, yet, and I'm not all that worried about it. What matters most is doing something that you like to do and that pays enough to support you. When you are old & grey, would you rather look back & say "I earned a ton of money, but was miserable", or "I always had what I needed and was happy"? I think that it is impossible for anyone, at the age of 19, 18, 20, or.... to know what will make them happy in 5, 10, or 20 years. So quit worrying and go with what feels right to you at the time!

I think you should be planning how to finance a college education instead. These days, that's the most direct route to a good career, higher paycheck and job stability.

If you don't want to do that, you could get a secretary job at a great company that has other entry level positions open each year--like a financial firm. So you can learn a lot on the job and try to move up to be an analyst or sales person at your company.

Sales is one area (of any company) you can succeed greatly without a degree. Even if you go sell shoes at the mall for awhile, if you're really good at it, you can apply and get sales jobs in any industry you want.

I knew in High school what field I wanted to go into. But I'd say just take your time and kinds of see where things lead you. I do however recommend you take a few non-credit classes at a local community college to kind of get a feel for different fields.

To my understanding those career tests are too broad and don't ask the right questions to give you a more solid suggestion on careers.

At 19 I had NO idea what I wanted to do. I did know what I DIDNT want to, but that didnt help much.

Over the next 20 years I drifted from job to job - mostly media related - and eventually discovered that I liked marketing.
So now I am working for a marketing company and loving it.

Dont stress out about not knowing. At your age that is perfectly normal.

Think about what things (hobbies and interests) that you DO like doing, and choose a college course that follows those interests.

Honey, I'm 27 and still haven't figured it out for sure. I'm really leaning toward real estate right now, but my hold back has always been that I didn't want to waste all that time and money for schooling and then go to work and hate that career. I mean how can you know you'll like something until you've tried it. Well recently, we sold and bought a new house, and I really think I would enjoy doing that. So your not alone. Good luck.

I of the belief that the harder path is the way to go. If you decide later that isn't what you want you can change. If you did it in the reverse order you likely will not change even if you do not like cosmetology because you would be facing so many years of study. In addition the first few years of nursing school are very basic and you will become aware of may branches of nursing that you can take if you want without any increase in the time it takes to get a degree.

I would recommend get a two year associate's degree at a technical school. Learn a trade. You'd be surprised at how much money you can make if you have some kind of technical skill.
