It depends on your body, I suppose, and on how insulin resistant you are. I'm on 2000 mg a day, and I admit, personally, I don't know anyone who is on less than 1500 mg a day for PCOS, but the first week that I was taking metformin, I took only 500 mg a day. Are you sure you're not supposed to ramp up the dose? Typically, because the medication has some unpleasant side effects, you start at a low dose and gradually increase it, about a week at a time, until you're on the dose that your doctor wants you on.

If you're uncertain, or concerned, call your doctor or health care provider.

They'll start you off a low dose to see if it works for YOU. If it doesn't work, the doctors can increase it as you go along. The thing with any drug is that it's pointless, and usually hazardous especially in the long run, to take more than you need. Trust your doctor on this. He/she is the one with your chart in hand looking at your results.
Good luck.

The doctor will start you on the lowest dosage possible. 500mg does seem very low, but your body might respond to this.

Hope the Met works. I have head good things about it. I have also heard that some women that are not responsive to clomid are responsive to femara.
