I have been on safari a few times, but not yet and overnight one. The afternoon/evening safaris are almost the same from all the operators. You will drive around in groups of cars (could be same group but mostly with others you meet at collecting points).

And after that you all come together in a large camp for barbeque, Belly Dancing and other local traditions. There are a few camps around the desert. Each camp has a few operators coming together.

It might sound an-masse, but that is not how I experienced it. I enjoy it very much, even if I have done it a few times now.

Find on this site more than 20 tour operators offering Desert Safari's, most of them have their prices on the site: http://www.startpagedubai.com/Desert-Safari.htm

Hostels are not so common in the Middle East. I think there are only 2 YH's in Dubai. Find info here: http://www.uaeyha.com/Text/1108487487062-5701/English

For a budget hotel you really have to compare different sites for the dates you are traveling. The prices can vary per hotel per booking site for certaing dates. Find here a hotel search with very good prices: http://www.startpagedubai.com/best_hotel_deals_in_dubai.htm

And yes, you get a little bit overloaded.... but is that not the joy before the travel? Searching around for all the options.

There's some good suggestions here and if you need to compare them to a directory of accommodation I've enclosed a link to a directory where you can sort by star rating, price and location. There are even some last minute offers here. I was suprised at how reasonable the prices were for hotels, and you might consider the additional advantages to staying in one, since prices are per room and the facilities would likely be better.

The YHA hostels are generally very good. You know the standard that you are getting regardless of where in the world you are. I don't know if there are any in UAE but speak to the YHA http://www.yha.org.uk/ to see if there any.

It's been years since I was in Dubai but try this site http://www.affiliate.viator.com/brochure/results_1.jsp?CONTINENT=Middle+East&COUNTRY=United+Arab+Emirates&AUID=4274 it should give you a lot of valuable information on what to do and there is a cheap hotel link.
