Rather than walking up and saying. Hey Happy Birthday. Give him a card and a gift. The card should go something like this.

I wanted to tell you Happy Birthday, but I know that this is probably your hardest Birthday ever. Please take this gift anyway and know that I love you and I am thinking about you everyday. I truely do hope that you are having a very good Birthday.

Be there for him there's nothing more worse to having your mother dying before your birthday with mothers day coming up. Treat him with lots of sympathy as he is not feeling like he wants to celebrate anything, empathise with him too, he will appreciate that more and in future he'll remember that you were there for him in hard times and one day give you a big hug and say 'Thank you'. Wish you both all the best xx

Wish your friend a happy birthday as normal but also let them know that you'll be there for him no matter what. Sometimes the pressure of losing a loved one, especially a parent, can be very heart breaking and if he needs to talk to someone to cry with then tell him that you will be by his side if he needs to. If he doesn't want to celebrate it then you should respect his wishes and not push him into doing anything too excessive.

Be sensitive, but not evasive. His mother died, he knows it and he knows you know it. Don't tip toe around the subject. Express your sorrow in his loss. You should not wish him a happy birthday. He will not experience happiness for a while. You might find a sympathy card that expresses how you feel, and write in the card that you will be thinking about him on his birthday.

Tell him you are sorry for his loss, he won't be thinking about his birthday, he will be mourning the loss of the person that brought him into the world. Just be a friend, attend the funeral and if that is not possible send a card and flowers. He will, please god, have many many birthdays, he will only bury his mother once

Best to let him take the lead. He may wish to forget his birthday this year, I know I did after I lost my dad.

Just let him know you are there if he wants to go out for a drink, though be warned the night will probably end with tears. But hey, thats what mates are for, a good shoulder to cry on.

Some inappropriate answers here. I have a feeling that when you see him you will just instinctively know what to do and say. Just be natural and speak from the heart. You could say that you know he won't have a happy birthday but you will be thinking of him with love.

Two Roses on one stem with jip and a beautiful silk ribbon. One rose for your mum and the other for her son who will always remain linked together through love and memories. Thinking of you on your special day.

give him a very big hug and let him cry if he needs to. Thats what i did when my friends cousin died. We didnt even say a word but it got her to feel better. I guess knowing that someone really loves u and having someone to hold is what makes them feel better.

Can understand your predicament, obviously he not going to have a 'Happy' Birthday. You could get a Thinking of you Card or simply write on a blank card Thinking of you on your special day. Must add I love humour but really feel some of the answers you are receiving are way out of line. Wonder how any of these people would feel if it was their loved one!
