It was inspired by true events. Obviously they can't play it exactly as it happened, and they had to change names, etc. BUT... YES. It was based on a true story. MS said in an interview that almost all of his films are based on true events. He said he liked doing movies that way because it makes it easier for the audience to believe the story. That is what makes him such a great film maker.

The Departed True Story

As hinted at by Angel of Mischeif its a Scorsese remake of "Infernal Affairs" (Infernal with an "f", or Mou Gaan Dou in pinyin) a pretty good Chinese movie starring Tony Leung (from "Hero"), but its not a true story...or as they probably have in a disclaimer somewhere "any resemblence to persons real or fictional are merely coincidental and not..."

I havent seen the US version, but given that its Scorsese, I'll bet its pretty good too.

its actually the first of a trilogy.

More from Wikipedia:
"In 2003 Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment acquired the rights for a Hollywood remake, titled The Departed, which was directed by Martin Scorsese, and stars Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson. The Departed was released on October 6, 2006."

There is a movie called Internal Affairs, I believe it's based in China, it's subtitled. I watched it first and it is the exact same as The Departed. So no, I don't think it's a true story.
