my walmart is pretty good about it, but still I wont buy because of their bad rep. Anyway, saving fish isnt going to help, walmart will just get more shipments.

I hate the fact that I'm too shy to complain to the manager, but there are other things you can do. As I already imagine, you've taken the first step as in never buying fish from them. It stings to walk by the bettas in their tiny cups, and knowing that if you save one another will fill its place shortly. I don't and everyone I know doesn't purchase fish from them. You could find a local fish club or the like and you're bound to find people interested in ending Wal-Mart's terror. My Wal-Mart never really had anyone patrolling the area, and I'd never seen any evidence of regular cleanings. They had all the tanks connected by a sump, and were keeping fish with different water parameter requirements in the same water. Seeing a green spotted puffer in the same water as a neon tetra is pretty shocking. The goldfish tanks were cluttered with rotting, moldy carcasses all caked onto the filter intake. I am not a violent person, but people like that assistant manager really test my patience. Luckily my local Wal-Mart doesn't seem to have fish anymore, but if you can, try to encourage everybody you know not to buy fish from them. Eventually they may realize they're losing money with lower sales and pull the fish from the stock.

Thank goodness you were able to rescue the one. I have seen how disgusting the tanks are. How they don't even remove the dead fish in a timely manner thus spreading disease. It's sad.
I remember about 12 years ago they kept the tanks pretty good, that was when they opened. Since then forget it. When they first opened we got one of the sucker fish. It lived a really long time. But we never bought anymore from them because the tanks after a short time were horrific.
I think if Sam Walton could see what became of his stores, etc. He would be really upset. Years ago long before you were born they did things like take orders from American factories who were closing. But that was a long time ago and the store nothing of what it once was.
I don't shop there anymore. I don't care for how they treat employees. or how they keep their stores. It's always a mess.
I'm sure they sold whatever they had and disposed of those that died. It's kind of what they did to all the small mom and pop stores they put out of business.
Recently the I heard the Walmart here had to close it's fabric department too. JoAnn drove the department to close. I applaud Jo Ann and Petsmart for doing better business and showing that we would rather shop at places that conduct business with better practices when given the option.
Hope your fish gets better soon! I applaud you on the rescue!

Wal Mart's pet products aren't so bad, but their fish livestock, especially on Long Island is terrible. I am HAPPY when I DON'T SEE FISH in their tanks. I like to think the fish livestock industry on Long Island has banned all Wal Mart's from keeping fish.
Time to time I see an oscar in their tanks and think to myself that at least half the employees wouldn't even know what facts to tell a person interested in owning the fish. I just nod my head and walk away from that department.

yeah, i know wal-mart sucks at keeping fish. Every single time i go there i see dead and dying fish, and it makes me soooo mad because i am a fish lover and know how to care for fish. Petsmart doesn't do the best job at keeping fish alive either, where i live at. Petco is pretty good at keeping fish, except neons, i dont think many people have had success in that anyway, i havent. But, i live in lincoln, ne and at both wal-marts they still sell fish and they still suck at it. And, i also buy fish there because then they will at least have a decent life, and i feel sorry for the poor things.

Granted, the quality of care does depend on the employees and those in charge at any given particular store. But, all of these comments, plus so many more complaints are the very reasons that Wal-Mart is not allowed to build in California. Enough people; the common, everyday people, stood up and said, "we don't approve of this store," to the point where California State will not approve 98% of Wal-Mart's applications to build. There are a few Wal-Marts in small, out-of-the-way towns, but a vast majority of places will not allow Wal-Mart in. Clearly, if enough people stand up and say, "We do not approve," their voices will be heard and things do change. If you disapprove of Wal-Mart's, or any businesse's practices, stand up and let your state's governing bodies know. Your voice can make a difference.

i think it depends what wal mart. the one where i get some of my goldfish are have this one guy who really cares for the tanks and the fish and knows alot. but that isn't a pet store remember. there fish are also the least expensive. I went to this one really nice petstore and bought a goldfish for 8 bucks and died after just 2 weeks! my first goldfish from walmart is super cute and was healthy when i bought her.

i totally agree with you. i think wal-mart and meijer treat their animals like crap, but in my opinion, meijer is the all-time worst. their tanks are never clean and they've always got 902384093284 goldfish all in one tank. both at wal-mart and meijer, i've found their treatment of bettas to be disgusting and cruel. they're usually confined to a plastic cup, they always look sick and unhappy, and their never given anywhere to hide (which is what bettas like to do best since they come from rice paddies in china).
i much prefer local pet stores b/c their specialty is pets only (not like wal-mart and meijer where they sell food and clothes and stuff too). the people who work there are much more knowledgeable and actually care about what they're selling.
and as bad as i feel for the fish at wal-mart and meijer, i never want to buy fish from there again b/c that just opens up a spot for more fish to be subjected to the torment of living at those stores. besides, the fish will be a waste of my money b/c they wont live long anyway.

It is obviously going to depend on the Wal-Mart store you go to. I was the department manager of Pets at our local Wal-Mart for awhile. I always made sure the fish were well taken care of. I have seen Wal Mart stores with terrible tanks however. It just depends on who is working there, what they know, and how much they care. That is going to be the case no matter what store you go to.
