I'm glad you dont want to change the exhaust pipe. that would just mae it sound tacky.. depending on what the car is. Anyway. the best method is to make the noise come from the engine itself.. not the exhaust. Replace the om stuff with a cone filter.. not an eclosed one or anythin flashy. just a normal k&n induction kit for about £60-£100.. this should give you a nce induction roar.

Please only try this if your engines over a 1.8 other wise you will just look stupid . No point havin a 1.2 sound like a grand prix car its still a 1.2 !!
Anyway change the air filter for a induction kit thats the first thing gives more engine power to.
unless you start going complicated with plectum valves and webers in the carb which is expensive . A standard stainless steel exhaust custom made is no more than £300 and does sound good and not a cop magnet (u pre historic) like people think,

Add an induction kit de-cat pipe and a sports tale box to the exhaust this is your cheapest method of making it soud better.
other wise you can't really make it sound better without changing the exhaust pipe

its not very technical and might cost a bit in fuel bills but if you drill some holes in the air filter box you will get an induction type sucking/ whooshing noise as you drive sounds louder and quite good just don't show anyone under the bonnet.

you cant or just drive it till your exhaust pipe falls off then it will get louder but the only way is to replace factory exhaust with aftermarket performance exhaust thats it .. if you listen to these other bozo's you will be replacing your motor....

drive with your window down, then the engine will sound much louder .... or buy an old mini 1000 and floor the accelerator - nothing happens except the engine sounds louder.......

If you were desperate, you could always drill a hole in the exhaust pipe.
A lot of cars have sound deadening material on the underside of the bonnet (hood), so I suppose you could remove that.

Run it very low on oil and put it in park and make the tachometor go into the red zone. Keep it there for about 20 minutes.

Drain off all of the oil. The engine will soon get louder.

disconect the exhaust at the engine manifold (although you may gas yourself)
Put some loose nuts and bolts in the oil filler that will make it noisier (but your engine wont last long)
Yell brruuummmm out the window as you are driving down the road
