how long does it take to become a surgeon, and how well do they get paid in los angeles and newyork?

It will take many years! You need four years of undergraduate school with an appropriate major, generally four years of medical school, then a surgical residency of three to five or more years depending upon what specialty in the surgical discipline you are pursuing; neurosurgery, plastic surgery, or orthopedics may require additional training. When you are finally finished, however, and particularly if you decide to practice in Los Angeles or New York, you can make lots and lots of money -- a fortune, actually! However, it is also very expensive to be a surgeon (or any kind of doctor); equipment and liability insurance are exorbitantly priced. Another negative related to the profession is the amount of your time that it may consume, including hours on call at night. Still, the pros most probably outweigh the cons...
