I know that they have to regularly shed their skin, but is it safe or necessary to help and pull off stubborn pieces. I noticed the one in the pet shop never have any excess stuff hanging on them, but maybe that's because they eat it off each other. Is it good to give it a hand in getting the stuff off?

It's best not to rush things along. If the "old" skin is still attached to the body, you could damage your leo's skin and cause bleeding. The best thing you can do to help him get the shed off is to give him a humidity chamber - you can put some moist moss or paper towleling under his regular hide, use a clean deli container turned upside down with an entrance hole cut in the rim and put the moss or towels in that, or just mist him a few times early in the day. If you mist, be careful not to overdo the humidity - these are desert animals!

No, if you help it you can hurt and possibly cause it to lose toes or minor bleeding.
