Senator Lisa Murkowski seems set for life in the Senate. It was pretty sleezy how she got in, Daddy having set up a "Search committee" and after "exhaustily examined all the many candidates" to replace himself as US senator, he choose his daughter. She claimed at one point that "it isn't nepotism because I'm qualified." Yes, Lisa, you are qualified but it was still nepotism.

She's doing a better job than he was - she is significantly smarter and less arrogantly bullheaded.

Frank Murkowski lost big time to several challangers included the winner, fellow Pepublician Sarah Palin. A mayor of a smaller town with no state office experience. Young, fresh face and the appearance of being less corrupted by the system. His very unpopular decisions to get the longevity bonus and especially to get a jet for his personal use (traded up a Ddept of Pub Safety twin-prop that could get to dirt strips for a jet that couldn't (but would get him to DC (as governor!) quicker.

While campaigning, Palin encourgaged the teaching of creationism in pubilc schools. Pro-guns, pro-development. So far her nose seems pretty clean.

Lisa Murkowski will be in the US Senate for a long time. Her only hard challange was in her first Senate race against Dem former-gov Tony Knowles. But now, with increasing seniority, she's in for good. Alaskans get so much more than their share of federal money because of thei senior congressional members, they'll always re-relect the incumbant.
