Most habidashery stores will sell pairs of knitting needles, and if you wanted a major store in the UK which sells them I'd suggest trying somewhere like John Lewis which usually has a pretty good craft/habidashery department. However, you could try this site online where they do a set which might suit your needs.

I don't believe they come in a case, but you could always buy a box to keep them in, or even make your own case on the sewing machine if you're good at that sort of thing.

Try a local yarn shop. I saw a beautiful set of needles in a case the other day at a shop. They will not be cheap, though! I have never seen a complete set with a case at Michael's or Hobby Lobby. I just purchased some Boye KnitMates, but I had to buy everything separately. Also, I'm sure you can find something on line. You can find anything on line, right?

I started with a beginner kit and when the book called for different sized needles I was reluctant to buy more when I didn't know whether or not I'd use them again. Some of the projects I didn't want to knit because the patterns were outdated. I would buy the needles as I go until I knew if I wanted to continue with knitting or until I knew what kind of knitting I prefer.

Online, check out Annie's Attic and Mary Maxim (I don't know their web addresses, but Google can find them for you quite easily.) Then again, if you're using Google, try typing "knitting needles assorted discount" into the search box and see what comes up. The two I named are really good and have just about everything.

In town, if you're in the US or Canada, try Michaels Crafts store or Joann Fabric and Crafts, or even the crafts section at WalMart. I have seen them in all these places at different times. Otherwise, try a knitting shop; of course, that's probably your priciest option.

Wool shops usually have sets of needles in a roll up case The roll has different width compartments to fit each size, or they sell long plastic boxes to ones you already own.
I too recommend bamboo needles as I tend to knit too loosely and find I get my tension better on them as they are less slippery than steel needles.

It rather depends on just what you are looking for. If you are looking for interchangeable needle tips and cables for circulars you want to look for either Denise needles, Boye, or the new ones from Knitpicks.com. All of these sets are in the $50 to $70 dollar range, and Denise and Boye are fairly well available in mass market department stores and yarn shops. KnitPicks needles are available through their catalog or internet site. I do not own any of these needles, I don't particularly care for interchangeables, especially since reports are that the joins on the needles to cables must be kept tight and most of these sets need to be either retightened periodically or have joins that fail.

Sets of straight needles in a case are fairly uncommon, one usually buys a case and the needles one wants in it, however, Yarn Barn in Lawrence, Kansas does have sets of both Brittany Birch and bamboo needles put up like this. They also sell sets of dpn in this manner. Caveat here, when I bought my set of Brittany dpn from them several years ago at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival the set was over $110. Webs also has sets of needles, including interchangeable bamboo circulars, again in the $100 category. I have also seen sets of straights from Lion Brand in packaging, usually 3 sizes of needles, but no case.

I would suggest that you go to patternworks.com, knitpicks.com, and www.yarn.com (that's Webs) and look at the needle sets available. Personally, I prefer to use either Addi or Inox circulars, and Brittany dpns. These are more expensive needles that any of the interchangeable circulars, but I have never had any of them break, and some of these needles have been in use for 20 years, and I knit constantly.

Most craft or yarn stores will have an assorted kit; go to a higher-end place, as they'll have better tools. Some really nice places and kits have separate pieces with various sizes of connectors for circular needles that you screw in. Those are amazing.

I used to work at Hobby Lobby, I know they have them. Any fabric store really. Look in the phone book, they may even have a knitting store where you live.
