What does this mean, it is a quote from Kate Chopin's the Awakening?

One who challenges tradition and prejudice must be very strong to handle the strain of overcoming those who would oppose.
The line is saying that the bird (person) who would rise above the norm must be strong to deal with those who prefer the old ways or cannot see past the differences.

Birds fly with the wind and use its power to gain elevation (to soar). You have to have strength to fly against the wind of public opinion, pre-conceived ideas and prejudice. Believe me, I've done it all my life.
