I used to have trouble too.

1...17.5% as a decimal fraction: - Move the point two places to the left.

...This will give 0.175: Multiply this by your amount:
...= 0.175 x 2050 = £358.75

2. = 0.175 x 250 = £43.75

First thing you have to do is change mixed number 17 & 1/2 percent into improper fraction or decimal. If you want to change it into fraction, it's 17 x 2 + 1 = 35 which becomes 35/2 percent. And since percent is always based on 100, It becomes 35/200. You can simplify that by 5 to make it easier to work with, becoming 7/40. From there, you just multiply wih 2050 and get an answer of 358.75. Similarly, multiply 7/40 with 250, and you'll get 43.75.
If you want to work with decimals, 17 & 1/2 percent becomes 17.5 percent. As I said above, percent means out of 100, so move the decimal point 2 places to the left, becoming 0.175. From there, you multiply 0.175 and 2050 and get an answer of 358.75 (same as above) and then with £250.00 , multiply 0.175 and 250 getting an answer of 43.75 (same as above).
Also, remember to put the units £ in front of the answer you get!
When you are determined and never give up, you can become top in your math class. Always try and work hard as best of your ability.

Are your working out VAT if so in you calculator put in £2050.00 then x it by 17.5% (press percent button on calculator) should amount to £358.75 these 2 together = total of 2408.75

do the same with £250.00 x 17.5% = £43.75 = total of £293.75

this works with any percentage you wish to work out.

Are you sure you're not working out the VAT you paid in the price of something which you paid £2050 and £250 for?

In which case these prices include the 17.5% VAT.

The VAT amount "in" £2050 would be £2050/1.175 then x by 0.175 = £305.32.

The VAT amount "in £250 would be £250/1.175 then x by 0.175=£37.23

Percent simply means per hundred. So, 17.5% , means 17.5 parts in every 100.
17.5% of £2050 is 17.5/100 times £2050 = £358.75
Similarly, 17.5% of £250 is 17.5/100 times £250 = £43.75

Simple; work out 10% - move the decimal point one place to the left, halve the result (5%) and do it again (2.5%).Add the three together and you have 17.5%. Alternatively buy a calculator.
