very good input from everyone. Thats what we really need todo.
I like the first guys ideas on actual courses that teach life situations.

I love the 2nd answer about 50% for the educators.

One of my best friends became a teacher. He was a complete jerk off, and wouldnt trust him with my own kids. I always told him that.

But hey, anyone that passes the test can become a teacher right?

it needs to actually teach... And I don't mean trig, calculus, biology, history etc. those are all really side things if you really think about it.

I have no classes teaching me how to do taxes, or what a W-2 form is, or how to get a job... I don't know what an equity is, or how to refinance. All ive learned so far in the Educational system is stuff I have to redo in college anyway.. i.e trig, algebra, world history, biology, computer apps... all the stuff ive taken is useless in real life unless im going to devote my life to a certain field. School systems need courses that teaches neccessary life skills.

I am not saying drop everything else, cause im sure most ppl would believe thats a dumb idea. I'm just saying, schools (all schools) should teach a life skills class, and more foreign language courses.

I think those are more necessary than knowing how to find the measure of a 30-60 right triangle with an m

Accountability. We need to hold educators responsible for the job they do. They are payed to prepare our children academically and socially for their adult lives. They have our children 9 hours a day and insist that an additional 4 to 5 hours of home work is necessary. This leaves no time for family events, training or interaction. I feel very strongly that if they can't teach it in 9 hours a day 9 month a year then they need to go back to school themselves. Homework is an exercise in total frustrations that is destroying the American family and causing Strife and discontent. Teachers should have a salary that is based on their individual success. Example 15,000.00 per Quarter When report cards go out if 100% of students have become proficient then they get all of that quarters salary if 50% then they receive 50% of salary and they are paid according to each Quarters performance. This would encourage more aggressive goal oriented teaching and less babysitting at the tax payers expense. There is nothing in today's system to encourage excellence because all you have to do is show up and you make the same as if you work hard and really care. HOW SAD!

It would be a lot better if it didn't have to educate the children of those coming illegally. We are talking about MILLIONS of nonEnglish speaking students and the drain on funds and disruption of education that costs our own children. Gifted programs and other programs we used to take for granted are being slashed wholesale to fund education for children of illegal immigrants. This in itself is a magnet drawing more over, particularly from countries such as Mexico which do not subsidize universal education for their poor. Their better life is at our children's expense.

I live in LA, so that problem dwarfs any other problem in education in my area.
