If you wear shorts wear sliders, and shin guards (try to get them in the color of the team your trying out for) also a visor, comfortable shirt, if it's warm wear a tank top not so much for comfort or to hide your sweat but it says something when you come out and your ready to walk the walk just be ready to back it up when your on the field. Attitude goes a long way during tryouts so go and project a persona of confidence....it'll get you noticed. Cleats are very important and do not wear tennis shoes cause when they have you running the bases the last thing you want to happen is to slip and fall while your running. Also, you cannot get a jump on the ball in tennis shoes cause you will slip some when you make your move. Cleats should not be an option there a must. If your being timed in sprints then the cleats will serve you well. Buy them now and wear them to break them in and also to take some of the newness off of them.

Good luck!

today was the last day of my tryouts. It depends on if tryouts are outside or inside(if you live in the upper half of the country snow is still melting so our tryouts are in the gym) but depending on the weather where you life, 99% chance you will want to have sweats, even if it is inside, in case you do sliding. Also a pair of shorts(not to short). A T-shirt. Tenis shoes(or cleats if outside), don't forget your glove, bat, and helmet. Most schools are different when It comes to their tryouts so it's not one specific thing. But also makse sure to have a physical on file with your school or you cannot particiapate.

pants are a must. they don't have to be actual softball pants but get some sweats. coaches, at least the ones i've had, aren't real big on shorts because of sliding. if you really want to wear shorts though, just bring some sweats a long incase you need them. if you're gonna be sliding, get some sliding shorts. for a shirt just get a t-shirt, and if you're outside wear cleats. hats are optional, but i'd recommend one if you're gonna be outside. bring batting gloves if you like using them and all your other gear.

When I go to softball practice I us ally wear shorts and a tangtop because if I sweat, people wouldn`t notice it.

Wear a baseball cap or a visor, sweats or shorts, a tee shirt and make sure your hair is in a ponytail if it's long. Bring your glove and tennis shoes should be fine for try outs, but if you have cleats bring them, make sure you bring water.

Before I answer your question directly, I have a comment or two to make to Eight Braker, and especially Bubbles: Hey, guys! You proud of yourselves for writing such downright crude remarks to a young girl who is simply trying to learn what she needs to know so she can do something that is new to her? Please get your minds out of the gutter, and simply answer the girl's question or leave her alone. She asked an honest, well thought out question of which others might like to learn the answer, as well, and doesn't deserve this type of abuse! Get a life, or get a girlfriend – if you can!
Really - referring to G strings, nudity, and nipple rings to a young girl really isn't too cool, is it? I have friends in the adult entertainment business who would NEVER be as crude as you guys were. Get over yourselves, and simply use this website to share your knowledge as well as learn a little more. I would give my left arm for our right to speak freely, but what you said crosses the line of decency...As they say, along with freedom comes responsibility, and I wonder how the guys in this girl's life - perhaps her father - feel about your comments. Hm...

Sorry, young lady, but I had to get that off my chest - you don't deserve that kind of treatment, and I apologize for my gender on that one. Don't let this type of guys keep you from asking your questions, because this is a good one!

Now, on to the question. I read that you are in New Jersey, which means the weather this time of year is pretty unpredictable. Therefore, simply make certain that you have enough layers of LIGHT WEIGHING, LOOSE, YET COMFORTABLE clothing in which you can easily move around like sweats or softball gear that you can either put on if it is chilly or take off if it is too warm. Make sure you have a jacket, as well - just in case you need it! Remember - once your arm is warmed up after throwing, you want to keep it that way, so a jacket can come in very handy...

Sliding pads or extra sweats if it is cold will protect your legs, and they are a necessity. I don't really like shorts in this sport because you might have to slide, but that is your prerogative. Just make sure you aren’t going to leave half your skin on the turf or dirt it you have to do some sliding, diving, or similar down and dirty movements! :-)

If it is going to be sunny, make sure you have some sunglasses handy, as well. You don't want to have too much trouble seeing the ball, so they are something to have on hand. In the old days, people used retractable shades, but with the new types you can get now, I recommend a pair that you can simply wear constantly without even removing.

Hats are, luckily, an option in girls' softball. If you like them, wear them. If not, don't. Unless of course your league absolutely, positively requires them.

Make certain your shoes and socks fit properly, which means your feet don't move around inside of them when you are stopping and starting like one does when playing this sport. Just make sure they fit snugly, but not so tightly they cut off your circulation or make you sore. If you have them, use softball/baseball shoes, of course, because the spikes or cleats are helpful when digging into the turf or dirt. If you are waiting to see if you make the team before getting shoes, simply use some type of gym shoe or something that will bite a little into the turf so you don't fall down - most sport shoes will suffice for a while, but shoes built for the sport are by far your best choice.

One more thing: I don't want to sound sexist, but what I am about to say is somewhat important, because I have seen this problem affect the quality of play with some girls, so you need to think about this: Having coached both guys and girls, we can't get around the fact that they are anatomically different. Therefore, when trying out for a team (even after you make the team) dress in a manner which makes you comfortable, yet at the same time able to perform at your best capacity. Case in point: I have seen girls in warm weather decide that they will get a tan along with some practice. Well...that is cool, but they wore tank tops that were really loose, and low cut. Put yourself in their shoes for a minute: The coach is a guy, and there are several guys in the stands or sidelines, as there always seems to be when there are cute girls around. You're a shortstop, your top is loose, and the coach hits you a low ground ball. Do you see what I am saying without me saying any more? I have seen girls simply let the ball go because they are reluctant to bend over, when a fuller, more tightly fitted shirt would have solved the problem before you even set foot on the field. There are way too many Eight Brakers and Bubbles out there who sort of don’t quite have concept of respect figured out yet, unfortunately, so want you to be at your best without such preventable worries. A good coach will of course talk to the girls about these types of problems at the first team meeting or tryout, but you can be ahead of the game by having already planned your dressing strategy beforehand!

Anyway, I hope this helps, despite its being quite long and rambling. I am still a bit miffed about some of your other responses, I guess, and can’t concentrate like normal. SORRY! Hope you are the star of the team! :-)

Why don't you wear a cute little dress and heels, what do you think you should wear.
