I heard that this is one of THE places to train if you want to make it big on Broadway. I'm considering applying, because I think I could make it. However, is it really worthwhile? Or, are there other perfessional training institutes I should be looking at?

AMADA is a fantastic school and offers excellent training and exposure to the professional world of musical theatre. (Only consider Julliard if you want to go into professional opera or classical voice. Otherwise, steer clear of that school because their faculty is not equipped to give you what you'll need for a career on Broadway.) Keep in mind that no school program, no matter how prestigious, is a quick or easy ticket to Broadway. I have friends who attended no name schools and ended up doing national tours or as members of the original casts of Ragtime and Wicked. I also have friends who graduated from AMADA who are still working as waiters and auditioning their tails off. If you can get into a good school, do it. You'll be learning and training from some great teachers. But whether or not you make it on to Broadway will be up to your skills, passion, perseverance, and marketability as a performer. Break a leg!

I have to agree with newyorkgal71. My opinion of AMADA has always been that they play off their name to make people think they're The American Academy of Dramatic Arts which IS a reputable and respected program that's been around since the late 1800's.

Although, if your only ambition is to "make it big on Broadway" it doesn't really make any difference because you don't have the right attitude to seriously study theatre. Reputable training institutes are for serious actors who want to hone their craft and improve their technique. If you're ready to work your butt off, face LOTS and lots of rejection and start at the bottom and work your way up over years of auditioning you might have the right attitude to become an actor. Otherwise, pop "High School Musical" back in the DVD player and call it a day.

I have a friend who went there and had the time of her life. She hasn't made it on Broadway yet, but she lives in NYC and works a lot. She would tell you that it's definitely worthwhile. I also know a girl who is there right now and is having a good experience.

Julliard is a prestigious school for those in the arts. A Degree from Julliard will look great on your resume. Julliard has a superb reputation for training actors.

AMDA is not well-recognized, it's a second-rate school. It will not look good on your resume.
