Ahh..Tammany Hall......yes, they both did. There where few voting regulations at this time, thereby causing the "political machines" to operate freely during this time. I think by the 1890's most of the political machines where grinding to a halt. When "Boss" Tweed was arrested in the 1870's, I think most cities cracked down. I may be wrong however. Try looking up in on Tammany Hall in Wikipedia, and see where it takes you. Good luck.

Probably, but the Democrats were more effective because they were more inclined to organize the urban immigrantss and hold their support as voting blocs (through small or large favors that served as a substitute for non-existent institutionalized or almost non-existent social services). The Repubicans, by then tended to be much more of a party for established American-born groups or older, better established immigrants largely located in smaller cities or in the rural areas.

Tammany Hall controlled New York City, and I believe they were Democrats. But the Republican political machine controlled Philadelphia with an iron fist. That where the saying "Philadelphia, corrupt and content" got started.
