Ah well...Stephen King is definitely the better storyteller. Koontz can't seem to get out of his own way long enough to tell us a good story without showing us how incredibly smart he thinks he is. S.K. tends to get right to the matter of the story as most real life events occur. You tend to relate to even the most fantasical of Kings stories and characters because they are drawn most like the average person. Koontz is more abstract and more removed from everyday existance and his characters are less than believable. Also, Koontz repeats himself and his themes over and over and over and the redundency is head spinning. It's always the child in peril, the absent father figure..blah blah blah.
As from personal experience, Mr.Koontz is not a very nice person on the whole. He's rude, egotisical and nasty in the extreme. So, if I was going to part with a few dollars for a novel, I'd take S.K. all the way, Mr. King just has a better grasp at what makes people tick and therefore, what scares them or makes them think.

Definitely Stephen King. Most people know Stephen King as a horror writer (The Stand, It) and know of one or two other things he has written like The Green Mile or the Gunslinger series, but the truth is that there are alot of other things he has written like Eyes of the Dragon and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon that are very different. Eyes of the Dragon is so popular that you can't even find it anymore. True fans or "Constant Readers" as King calls them, snap up every copy they can get their hands on. The First Edition is worth about $700 U.S. right now.
Stephen King is a true master of his craft. He can write anything he sets his mind to. The Gunslinger series is one of the most popular series ever written and It is one of the highest earning horror books written in the last 50 years.
Dean Koontz is very good, but he'll never be Stephen King.

I have been reading both for over 10 years. I would have to agree with you that King is a better, more conceptual author. He has tied most of his books together and formed his own "universe." King also takes time between books to fully flush out the plot, where as Koontz puts out a book a couple times a year.

Don't get me wrong, I love Koontz as well, and appreciate that he is prolific, but King is better.

I prefer King's early works over anything Koontz has ever written.
but King doesn't write like he used to. I don't know why. So now I'll read a Koontz before I'd read a King. Koontz continues to write the way he always did, consistantly, book after book, and they are all fresh.

when king first started he was very good, read "the dead zone",
then he found out people would read any hack piece he put his name on.....Koontz is just so predictable, read the first chapter and (unless you are just clueless) you know how, where , when,
why....
I have like the "Odd" books by Koontz, tho....can't remember the
last King book that was worth the time...

Koontz is more dependable. King may be better when he's on his game (The Green Mile) but sometimes he falls on his face (The Gunslinger).

I prefer King. I've read almost all of his books and short stories.

Some may argue that his books are similar to each other...
But I like that. He plays to his strengths, and he does it very well. If one reads the Dark Tower series, he brings in a lot of his characters from other books and I think it's great how he ties everything together.

Hearts in Atlantis was beautiful, IT was terrifying, Firestarter was heartbreaking, The Talisman is a great fantasy, and Dark Tower is amazing beyond belief. I think he's very talented.

For sheer impact, I would have to say that Stephen King is the better of the two writers.
