Well a couple things came together:

1. It's largely an african american adaptation. So, it's about the urban experience. Wizard of Oz wass a very "white" movie, it's from the 50s after all. Wiz was about how times have changed in hollywood.

2. Michael Jackson was HUGE at the time, and he likes "fantasy world" things- he named his house the "Neverland" ranch, after all.

3. There hadn't been a major remake of W of O yet so it was a novel idea.

The Wiz where the little kid played Mario and won all the cash?

Dude, that movie rocks. A classic kid's video game movie!

If your talking about the ghetto remake of the Wizard of Oz, then there is really no excuse for making that and really the less said about that sad event the better.

Someone decided to try to see just how badly they could screw up a classic.

I know I'm gonna get sh*t for saying that, but I have never been able to understand those idiotic remakes.

There's a reason those movies never do well. It's like watching Mad TV in feature film format.

Funny, if you're drunk or stoned, but when you watch it sober you can't help thinking... "What the hell is this bullsh*t?"
