Most Dominicans have a darker skin tone, and they look a lot like black people.Dominicans tend to get mad every time a person "confuses" a Dominican person from a black person, when in reality
they look identically alike.I have been to Santo Domingo several times,I have grew up with Dominicans all my life,I know about they're culture, and I know how they live. These are people who don't want to be nothing like black people in the states, when evidently these people have a culture that was enriched by African
derived music, which is ubiquitous all over the Dominican Republic.Dominicans tend to think that the Spaniards brought all that beauty to the Dominican Republic. These people go as far as calling them selves Taino Indian rather that black or mulatto, just to
show shame of they're heritage and deny it.A 2006 study shows that most Puerto Ricans and some Cubans have Taino bloodlines.73% are mixed,16% are white,and11% are black.Even though most are mixed, many have mixed with Haitians.

That is simple because it all deals with one word: HAITI

The Dominican Republic won their independence from Haiti after a brutal reign by Haitian overlords. During the Haitian ocuupation the use of Spanish was suppressed, slaves were freed, Catholicism was considered to be against the state, etc.. Dominicans still resent Haitians for this and have numerous times accused Haiti of trying to invade their country by sending millions of Haitians to cross the country illegally. They see Haiti as backwards, and since most Haitians are black, they deny their African heritage for fears of social mobility. Dominicans have more African blood than any other Latino nationality. Yet, the Haitian occupation has always been a very negative chapter in their history. Here are some examples of their negative outlook on Haitian/African ancestry:

(1) Haitians need visas to visit the Domiinican Republic

(2) The Haitian neighborhood in Santo Domingo is referred by many locals as "Culo Prieto" ("Black ***")

(3) The Dominican Republic only recognizes three races for passport issuance: (a) Europeo ("European"); (b) Indio Mestizo ("Brown Indian"); and (c) "Indio Oscuro" ("Dark Indian"). African is not an option.

(4) Former President Joaquin Balaguer accused his polotical opponent the late Juan Pena Gomez (who was born of Haitian parents) of being an agent of France and Haiti. He also wrote a book called "La Isla al Revez" ("The Island heading backwards") where he claimed Haiti was trying to destroy European bloodlines by having Haitian men rape white Dominican women. These accusations although unbased are believed by the majority of Dominicans.

I don't think it is a denial of their African Heritage. I also know some Cubans, Hondurans, Dominicans, and Puerto Ricans and they all obviously have African ancestry. But in many Latin American countries they identify themselves by culture and not race specifically. They are all Latinos regardless of color they will just say someone is Moreno/Morena Negrita etc. Now in recent history with American and European cultures infiltrating their societies they are beginning to define and judge themselves based on color but for the most part Boriqua is Boriqua as a Puerto Rican friend of mine used to say.
Although they have African ancestry they want to distinguish themselves from Black Americans who are not commonly viewed in a positive light in their society. This is not just Latin people but also some Africans feel this way. I used to live in an area with a large African population and they absolutely hated Black Americans and didn't want anything to do with us. I had a Nigerian boyfriend and Nigerian girls hated that I was with him almost like they considered it an interracial relationship. His parents did not like the idea of him dating an Black American girl, we were beneath them. They had no problem with him being with a Asian or African girl though.
So I don't think the issue is with the race more than it is with the culture. Latin people are very prod of their culture and want to be identified as who they are. It is us in the US who judge people by race instead of us all just being Americans.

It might be because of the negative image that Africans and African Americans have in the media. But there are Dominicans and latinos in general that do consider themselves Black such as actress Zoe Saldana, Merlin Santana, Celita Cruz etc..

Perhaps it started with the stigma of black meaning slave. After that the african americans were seen as stupid, then rude, and now dangerous and violent. Because of this view point they may be trying to seperate themselves from sharing this kind of stigma. I mean if your ancesters were viewed as that awful, and were to this day not treated as equal by some people then wouldnt you do anything to seperate yourself from living a life where you are looked down on because of your skin color?
