I think it's because most of them think it's cool to be players especially if they grew up without a good father to show them what is right. Many athlete's are cheaters. They know they are fine and can get lots of girls so they take advantage of that without thinking of the girls feelings. Your friend is right - don't ever date a cheater because they never change. Once a cheater always a cheater.

For the same reasons that any other color of man might: he values quantity over quality, or variety over a meaningful relationship, he is not ready for a committed relationship... There are MANY possible reasons. In this case it sounds like many attractive girls make themselves available to him, and at this point in his life he doesn't see any reason to deny himself.
