I am lead to believe that Oscar Wilde said words to the effect of : 'The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on, as it is never of any use to oneself' .... (please excuse any corruption ...)

Giving advice - always a good thing. People can be TOO quick to give advice though! Sometimes, somebody can give you advice that emotionally hurts you, or makes no sense at all. That proves Oscar Wilde isn't always correct.

we seek answers in our attempts to seek justification, truth, understanding and confirmation of our doubts, fears, hopes, expectations and knowledge because it is only by doing so that we know what it is that people are asking and suggesting to us. we question everything; everything in the world is opened up for questioning because everything and to a certain extent, everyone has a question mark attached to them, seeing as there is absolutely no fixed or concrete answer or solution to everything. in relation to oscar wilde's claim that good advice is of no real worth to anyone, other than for it to be passed onto someone in a else, it seeks to reinforce the idea that rather that solutions and answers are things we expect, it cannot be utilised as he deems them as irreverent and ineffective

Hmm.

My (Biology based) view is that we have evolved to do so as it is in our benefit.

Asking questions/seeking answers is how knowledge is passed on, mainly from adults to children. Imagine, how life would be if we had to learn EVERYTHING form personal experience. It would take a long time and would lead perhaps to extinction!

I've been on here a long time. I spend most of the time in the relationship section. It would seem that people there already know the answer and they know what should be done.
They only seem to be asking the question to build support and to justify what they feel.

Oscar was always amusing but not always right.
Some people ask questions because they want help.
Some people ask questions because they want affirmation for what they intend to do despite any help.
Some people ask questions because a lack of definite answer from others makes them feel superior knowledge wise.
Some people ask questions as a way of telling people subtley what is going on in their life, but they dont necessarily want an answer, but just to be the centre of attention.
And so on...
Why do you ask?

One reason is because just being humans we have to fill in the blanks. Facts usually do better here than our imaginations. Our curiosity also demands answers. And lastly because some of us don't look to a Deity for reasons and explanations.

It is the very nature of the human being to want to know, to gain knowledge and to be able to explain why something is the way it is. We need to use our brain, that is why we have it.

For advice from others, we often get puzzled and confused when we've got a problem and seek advice!

People are quick to offer advice, but rarely heed others. Its human nature.
