Mmmm. Celebrities drive me crazy.
Following the celebrity styles drives me crazy.
Them setting the trends drive me CRAZY.
People looking up to celebrities... also as you probably guessed... drives me crazy.

They are practically the same as teenagers now-a-days.
Except maybe a little more talented, but who says that makes them a better person?
Drinking, getting addicted to drugs, partying... what kind of role models are these?
Why are these the celebrities?
They don't deserve our attention.

Why is it that when they get addicted to drugs, they get on the news and it is a big thing, but it is just ignored for regular kids?
Like you, I do not understand this.
I hate the pressure kids feel to fit in.

Without celebrities, kids could make their own style and be more of who THEY want to be... not who everyone else wants them to be.

A lot of people care what they think or they wouldn't be wasting their time articulating about politics. Do you think politicians (from both parties) would have them on the podiums behind them if it didn't influence a significant amount of people. They don't sway my vote, but I'm with them if they stand where I do on the issues. But I bet you'd be surprised on the votes that they do sway.

I like to think of celebrities as exactly what they are - trained monkeys. No insult to monkeys, but 100 years ago these vile people would have been incarnated as monkeys dancing to an organ grinder's tune. We would have laughed and thought how cute they were, but no one other than some lunatic would have asked for their opinion (if you doubt me just look at Paris Hilton). Most of these celebrities that America worships have barely enough brain cells to deliver their lines in a manner that's almost plausibly human. It's exactly this level of stupidity mixed with America's fawning that makes them believe they have anything to contribute the national discourse. They are certainly dangerous because nothing is more dangerous than someone with influence, but no insight.

If they stood for certain values, and their music and actions reflected this, then they MIGHT sway my vote, but it would definetely depend on the issues at hand. Then again, if a celebrity and I shared the same values, then I wouldn't need them to sway my vote because I'd already agree with them.

Because they use their celebrity status to invoke change?

What is wrong with that?

It's much preferable to hear them talk about politics than something vapid like hair treatments.

Just because they are a celebrity does not mean they have any less valuable of an opinion as opposed to anyone else... Including you, or me. You asked our opinions, why don't their opinions matter equally? It's merely a matter of you hearing their opinions because they have a soapbox from which to broadcast it. And you in turn used the internet to broadcast your opinion.

I enjoy political discourse, and frankly, more people need to get into the decision making process in this country. When celebrities bring attention to matter of great importance that are generally overlooked, then they are doing good for the world.

They couldn't sway my vote any more than your nasty opinion of women who drive minivans could make me trade in my caravan.
You're a really nasty person. You say soccer moms are "an angry group"? You're the one who wants to slap soccer moms in minivans.
You just wish your kids could be 1/8 of the kids mine are.
