Moved into new apartment and we paid prorated rent...but come this week they send us a notice saying we never paid it....well they signed the lease saying we paid and we gave them the money order for it....so I talked to them and they say they don't have it, so they are giving us three days to pay....I don't want to have to pay all of that money again since I just gave it to them....and also in the midst of moving we haven't found the receipt from the money order...What should we do?

hold that receipt and that rental agreement.
If they gave you the keys and signed the agreement .....those 2 things speak to the fact that you paid. The reciept doesnt necessarily but you can find out if it was cashed with it.
The let them give you notice. After the 3 days they have to file eviction........then you go in and respond. At the court date bring all your stuff. If they lost the M/O thats their problem.
They have to prove you didnt pay. The fact they dont have $ order doesnt prove it wasnt paid.
The fact they gave you keys will lead judge to make a reasonable assumption that you did.

You can go back to the place where you purchased the money order, they will have record of it, request a copy and also ask if the money order had been cashed. Once you have that, get your rental agreement out and proceed to the manager's office with your receipt and agreement in hand. If they still refuse to honor the agreement, you have rights under your state's laws. Request a manuel that explains your rights and responsibilities.

Go back to the place you received the money order..They will give you a copy of receipt..They also can track the money to see if it's been payed..(cashed)...Go from there.
