Catcher:
Ivan Rodriguez has the best defense of the league, while Brian McCann has the best hitting of the league. However, Joe Mauer shows a bit of both worlds, and has 140 game potential.
First base:
Ryan Howard gets honourable mention for his MVP caliber season, but Pujols also gives defense and a bit of speed.
Second base:
The three names coming out to me are Robinson Cano, Dan Uggla and Chase Utley. Utley's bat is a nice asset, but I want defense at second. It's a close decision, but Robinson Cano would be my choice.
Shortstop:
Defense is key at short. Although I'd like to pick Adam Everett, some hitting is key. So, I'll take a bit of a gamble, but choose Rafael Furcal, giving a good combination of hitting, speed and defense.
Third base:
Great offense, and average defense, I'll choose Miguel Cabrera as my third baseman. He could even steal 10 bases.
Left field:
I'll give honourable mentions to Matt Holliday, but playing in Coors, and low defense hurt him. I'll choose Jason Bay as my left fielder, as he has great hitting, speed and fielding.
Center field:
Carlos Beltran and Grady Sizemore are my two choices. However, while they both hit and run, I'll give it to Beltran, since he also has defense.
Right field:
I looked at a few players, but I'll pick Vladimir Guerrero in right. His defense isn't as high as it could be, but his arm will compensate. And, he can still run.
Starting pitcher:
I'm trying to find someone else who can compare with Johan Santana's numbers, but I can't. From those who threw 200 innings, his control and power can't be beat.
Honourable mentions, a healthy Francisco Liriano however...
Closer:
It's hard to rate closers from year to year, as they fluctuate a lot. Just like B.J. Ryan had a great 2006, I'd hate to expect the same in 2007. So, from 2006 stats, the clear winner is Joe Nathan. I will give honourable mentions to Mariano Rivera, who set the bar on closer consistancy.
So, my ultimate lineup shows some of the best bats, speed and defense in the league, as a team of just blind HR hitters (McCann, Howard, Utley, A.Ramirez, B.Hall, Soriano, A.Jones, Dye) shouldn't stack up to a well balanced team playing the fundamentals. And, we can still put a home run hitter or two in.

SS Jose Reyes
OF Alfonso Soriano
1B Albert Pujols
OF Manny Ramirez
C Joe Mauer
2B Chase Utley
OF Carl Crawford
3B Alex Rodriguez
SP Johan Santana
RP Mariano Rivera
I tried to pick a lineup that best blends batting average, power, and speed... Johan Santana is, at this point, by far the best starter in the majors and Mariano Rivera is the most clutch closer of all time... he may not have stats that match Joe Nathan or F-Rod at this point, but he has more rings.

1B- Pujols, 2B- Utley, SS- Jeter, 3B- Arod, C- Maur, OF- Soriano, Vlad, Manny, DH - Ortiz, P- Santana Closer - Mariano
There's really no question for 1B, Pujols is by far the best but I'd put Howard as second. as for Utley, 2B may be the weakest position in baseball, I think Utley is the best, and Cano is actually in second, anyone who can hit over .340 in his second year in the majors deserves to be ranked among the best. I think Jeter is the best SS b/c he hits over .310 every year, he gets the hits, runs, OBP, he can bunt guys over, he can steal, and lets face it hes a winner. Many people say Reyes after his huge year last year. While it's true that he had a monster season, he hasn't proven anything yet, Jeter has four world series rings to show. I pick Arod for third base b/c when you hit .290 with 35 HR's and 120 RBI's and people talk about you having a terrible season and being on the trading block, that shows just how good he is and how much is excpected of him, and even last year I thnk he basically lived up to those expectations. OF I said Vlad, Soriano, and Manny. Vlad is extremely consistent and always hits over .300 with HR's, RBI's, SLG, OBP, hits......Soriano is always a 40/40 threat and esp in a hitter's park like Wrigley he should come close to if not get another 40/40. He may even get 50/50 one day. Manny - its just Manny being Manny every year, .300, HR's, RBI's, Runs.......(basically same as Vlad). David Ortiz is possibly the best DH in the history of the game, Mr. Clutch and I hate him cuz he kills the yankees but the guy has everyones respect and hes a good guy and an even better baseball player. The best catcher has got to be Maur. He slowed down at the end of the year last season because he was worn out but for the majority of the season he was hitting over .380- that's simply incredible. Pitcher is def. Johan, cy young threat every year. Mariano is the best closer in the history of the game. period. point. blank. no competition.

C- Joe Mauer, led the A.L. in batting average (.347), good speed and strong arm
1B- Albert Pujols, purest hitter in the big leagues, can hit for power (ask Brad Lidge), can hit for average (ask Brad Lidge) and is a gold glover on defense
2B- Robinson Cano, hit over .330 last year, great speed, best defensive middle infielder
3B- Alex Rodriguez, had a down year in 2006 for the Yanks, but people tend to look past his 400+ career homeruns, he's still a dangerous hitter, look for a big 2007
SS- Jose Reyes, hit for .300 last year, high on-base percentage, fastest guy in baseball, superb defense
OF- Ichiro, hit for .372 and 262 hits a couple of years ago, excellent base stealer, very strong arm, great defense
OF- Vladimir Guerrero, like Pujols he can hit for power, average, you name it, strongest arm in the outfield, underrated speed
OF- Carlos Beltran, finally made his mark in the Big Apple last year, he can hit, he can steal and he can change the outcome of games with his defense
DH- David Ortiz, maybe the most powerful hitter today, has a solid batting average, perhaps the most clutch hitter today
SP- Brandon Webb, has four excellent pitches (including a nasty slider), decent pickoff move, and solid defense on the mound
RELIEVER- Cla Meredith, had an era lower than 2.00, rarely gives up hits, ideal ground ball pitcher, confuses hitters with his repertoire
CL- Trevor Hoffman, all-time saves king, has the gnarliest changeup in the game, rarely blows saves
