It depends a lot on how you intend to use the pump/why you need to pump.

Will you be just offering an occasional bottle?
Going back to work and pumping several times a day?
Exclusively pumping?

If you just want a pump for occasional use(I.e you are a stay at home mom) I would HIGHLY recommend the Medela Harmony Manual breastpump. I was given one free of charge at the hospital, and I love it! But, I also don't pump very often. If you are going to need one to pump while you go back to work you will probably want to look into paying the extra and getting a GOOD pump. I've heard nothing but good things about the Medela Pump in Style, but another one to possibly consider would be the Bailey Nurture III. You could also check out their website....they have a low-income program to assist you in being able to afford one of their pumps.

What you could do is go to get what is called W.I.C-(woman infant children) it is a government program that helps provide formula, milk, food for mothers and babies... nursing mothers can also get FREE breastpumps. Those can be either electric or manual. I would check with your local health department and/or wic office.. look in the government pages for this information...

The only pump that was worth any type of money and effort was renting a professional pump. I found a nurse who runs a business out of her home, rents professional breast pumps and rented it month by month. It was so much better than the money I wasted on the ones from the store that didnt even work for me. It wasnt expensive to rent either. Most hospitals rent them now. Go that route.

go to babies r us or something. They will have several to choose from. Just make sure you read the boxes carefully. Get one that sucks and releases like a baby would!!!! Otherwise it will feel like its trying to suck your entire boob in to the darn pump. Those kind will hurt bad, but the others work just fine. You can probably find one for around $20 or $25

There are lots of choices out there. Medela makes a great pump but do tend to be pricy. I hear that Ameda makes a less exspensive one that is quite good. If you want, go to this site, La Leche League forum is full of moms who are experienced.

Some hospitals allow you to rent them as well. Ask, it cna't hurt.

Check with your insurance company. Sometimes they will cover the cost of a pump.
