My daughters have at least one roommate that they would like us to invite to the party, but we are not sure about doing that due to some questionable past history with him. He seems to have turned himself around from that, but still we cannot help but remember the past. What I was wondering is whether we should "bite the bullet" and invite him even though we are not entirely comfortable with that or hope that our daughters would understand our reasoning if we chose not to invite him. Since this is mostly a family and close friends type of occasion I am not sure what to do next and I have to get the invitations out within the next few days. Any reasonable advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Give the invite to your daughter, she knows him best. Tell her though that you expect him to behave appropriatly at this family gathering and it's up to her to decide whether or not he could do that.

This is a special occasion to celebrate a special birthday for your Mother. You are not obliged to invite anyone she doesn't know and if your daughters can't respect that and attend without this guy, maybe they shouldn't be there either. It's not too much to expect them to put your Mother first before what they want for one night.

Invite your daughters and allow them to bring 1 guest of their choosing.

If and When some bad behavior from any of your guests happens.
Deal with it then.

Don't live with the past.
Let it go.
It's gonna be fine.
I'm sure you have the cake, and decorations to worry about!
Invite him, hope for the best and have a plan b in mind if something goes wrong, you just have someone other than you escort him out, as you would any other guest.

don't worry about him, keep the focus on you and your mom!!!

have fun.
relax!
life is too short.
It's a family and friends party.

don't let you daughter know about your plan B to excort him or anyone out with bad behavior.

Or just tell everyone, "i expect everyone to be on their best behavior!!"

The more the merrier. Your mom will love all the people and this could be her last birthday. Make sure you have as many people as possible... and a male stripper for mom would be good too.
