You don't play, BUT you don't lose that year of eligabilty. Actually the point of a redshirt is you are still allowed to practice with the team, without losing the playing time.

You have 4 years of eligibility. A redshirt gives you 5 years to graduate and participate on the team while playing 4 years. There are times that if you get hurt before or during a season you can get a medical redshirt, which is separate from the traditional developmental redshirt. If you sat out a year to redshirt, you could also receive a medical redshirt, but you aren't eligible to apply for a medical redshirt until your eligibility is exhausted.
Most people redshirt in football because high schoolers typically aren't ready to play at the collegiate level, at least in Division I football.

When a player gets redshirted he cannot play in any games for his team that season. This gives him an extra year of eligibility. Meaning a player could play 5 years in college if he is redhsirted. You could be redshirted for many reasons. Most common when you are injured and cannot participate or freshmen that come in are not ready to make a significant impact, so the coach redshirts them in order, to have them for another year. The player can still practice with the team when redshirted.

What it means is that you sit out your freshman year. If you are redshirted you cannot step onto the football field during a game your entire freshman year or you lose that extra year. When you are a redshirt it is usually because you are good but there is a star already at your position and they are giving you a chance to play four years (not counting your freshman year) It means you are elligible to be a part of the football team for 5 years but you are only allowed to play four years. so if you are redshirted you do not want to be put in during your freshman year because that makes you a true freshman as soon as you step on the field (even if you only play in one game all year for only one play) and at the point you step on the field you are only allowed to play 3 more years. No matter what you do you are only elligible to PLAY games for four years, redshirting just makes you wait a year before you begin your 4 years, that way the Adrian Petersons will graduate or go pro leaving you the starting spot the following year. Hope this helps

A team that has a lot of talent at a position, but have another one that came in will be Redshirted or if he is injured early in the year or in camp they can Redshirt him.
Now Redshirting is when a player is not eligible play for the team, but he doesnt loose his year of playing elgibility...Also if he is needed in the year they can snag him and play him but that will count as him loosing that year of playing. You can only be redshirted once and this is usually done their Freshman year unless he is injured and then they do it anytime. Can be a Senior in school but only a 4 year Junior in sports.

Red shirted is the college word for benched. I think if a player gets injured you could play while being redshirted, if the team has no other option. You can play college footbal for atleast 5 years. I would think it would be as long as it takes you to graduate or get out of college but I am not sure. I know you can do atleast 5 though.

There are two types of a redshirt. You can have a developmental redshirt or a medical redshirt. A developmental redshirt is only for freshmen who wish to improve their skills without losing their year of eligibility. A medical redshirt can be applyed for anytime in your career if you get injured. Most of the time you are injured in a early game when you redshirt.
