Sleep apnea is caused by frequent interruptions during deep sleep. The most common symptom of sleep apnea is "choking" while sleeping.

I highly doubt your son has sleep apnea. Alot of babies are just very sound sleepers, and while it may seem that he's not taking the time to breathe, you're probably right. At this early on in age, a newborn can "forget" to breathe sometimes. If you see he's having trouble breathing or that he's skipping breaths, roll him on his side or lift him up a little to remind him to breathe.

If you truly feel something is wrong, then take him to see his doctor or bring this issue up at your next ped. visit.

Dear Sarah,
You need to have your son evaluated by a physician. Sleep apnia is a very serious condition. Don't wait.

ALWAYS talk to your doctor about issues concerning your baby's health. The doctor may even know of sleeping positions for your son, ya never know until you get professional help.

First and formost check with your doctor. But, do know that babies have very different breathing than adults. It is common for them to take a few breaths, then pause, then begin breathing again after a few seconds.
