I live in the U.S. I have a daughter that is not old enough to date (by my rules). I am interested in the opinion of other parents as to when they have allowed or will allow their child to begin dating. If you are not in the U.S., please indicate what country you are from (interesting to see if the age varies by country)

I started dating at 15, but the general age of acceptance is 16. Please keep in mind that each state has statutory laws that prescribe certain ages. For instance, in Georgia, a 17 year old boy went to jail for going out with and having sex with a 16 year old girl. He has been labeled a pedophile...It's crazy but it is true...so check the laws in your state.

BOTTOM LINE: Assess your child's maturity level as well. Do you feel they are mature enough and trustworthy enough to handle the dating scene?

Typically teenagers start dating one on one at 16. If you don't let your child date until they are an adult, once they get to they will go wild and probably go way overboard because they have been so sheltered. This girl I knew in high school couldn't date and her parents were really strick. Once she got into college, she slept with A LOT of guys and was considered a ho. So, don't be too strict.

I wasn't allowed to date until I was 16 or a Junior in high school ... even then I couldn't drive with a boy or spend the night at there house ... my dad had to meet every guy I started talking to ... I had to be home no later than 11pm ... I couldn't be at their house if his parents weren't there either ... and let me tell you ... my daughter will probably have a little more rules than that ... lol ... !!!

Varies by child. They need to be responsible and emotionally mature enough to deal with dating. (unless you're in Kentucky, then the age is 6 with marriage by no later than 8).

I will not allow my children to date until they are at least in high school and they have to have good grades and stay out of trouble. I have 3 boys, ages 14, 13, and 12. They are always saying that they have girlfriends and I tell them only in their minds. I believe they should be in high school and trying to make something of themselves. I live in the USA.

We allowed our youngest son to group date starting at age 16....US. My ex didn't have any structure so our other to sons did what ever and so far it's been a mess both have had children out of wedlock...whom I love however didn't love the anti-parenting on the part of their father. I say a mess because there are serious serious problems between them and the mother of their children whom they did not marry.
