I know a person who was on a bus when a man and his son came up on the bus. They both looked "very bad" like they haven't showered for a while.... etc.
The boy started playing and moving in the bus which annoyed the people around them. The guy I know went to the father and told him that his son is annoying everybody on the bus. The father said: "I'm sorry I wasn't paying attention my son. I'm very depressed because his mother just died in the hospital right now and I'm shocked.

Not long ago, Michael Stipe visited a soup kitchen in Athens, Georgia. He was pleased with the way he was treated -- with kindness and dignity. He made a nice donation to the Soup Kitchen.

Once, I went into a furniture store to buy an amoir. I was dressed shabbily, as these were my comfortable, work around the house, clothes. The guy at the furniture store treated me lower than excrement. Needless to say, he didn't make the sale.

Later, I returned to the store, dressed in my work clothes (suit, tie, etc.) The same sales person was super nice to me and showed me what I wanted to buy. Needless to say, he didn't make the sale.

The biggest risk (to me) of judging people by their appearance, is doing so negatively, and risking offending them as well as missing out on making a possible friend.
