any team that takes Troy Smith on the first day of the draft will regret it.
as many have said - he's too small - listed at 6'0" - so he's probably only about 5'9" - 5'10"
poor pocket presence - he had no idea where the defenders were when he played Florida, he took un needed sacks
he's slow - those Florida defensive lineman were catching him from behind - I thought he was supposed to be fast
He has NO accuracy - 9/29 combined against Florida and in the Senior Bowl.
This kid is NOT an NFL quarterback.
PS: Jason White, Eric Crouch, Chris Weinke, Danny Wuerrfel, Gino Toretta, Ty Detmer, Andre Ware - They all won the Heisman Trophy since 1989, and not one of them was any good in the NFL.

okay, first remember that Troy Smith is expected to go in the 2 round NFL draft. Then remember that only 64 individuals in the entire world are selected each year.
Although Troy Smith did have an incredible college campaign (including winning the Hiesman), he does not have the ideal height for an NFL QB. He is undersized. NFL players are much bigger and faster then college ones, so it is important that you choose someone who fits the ideal. His lack of height will cause him to have a lot of passes batted down at the line of scrimage, and also cause him to miss a lot of open seems.
Smith also has a tendency to lock on to one reciever and does not always see the entire field. He also doesnt use great fundamentals, and often comes out sloppy.
Also he is not considered to be NFL ready, and is still very immature.
All of these cause concerns for teams, and teams want to be sure they are getting the right guy. QB is a extremely important position in the NFL and they do not want to get a guy who they do not think can lead them for years to come. It's hard to make an investment in a draft on a player who will play your most important position when he is undersized. (EVEN IF HE IS A HEISMAN winner). All of this are reasons why he drops from a top 5 player, about 30-40 spots to around the 35th pick.
Still he will be one of the top 5 qbs taken. With Brady Quinn and Jamarcus Russell being the only REALLY NFL ready qbs. The others (including Smith) will all be expected to serve as a backup and learn from veterain qbs and coaches.
Also -- remember Eric Crouch was a heisman winner and is currently a member of the CFL's Toronto Argonauts, so it takes more then to just win a heisman, and many don't think Smith has the character to be successful in the National Football League.

He won't go as late as you think, but he isn't the top QB because of his lack of size as well as his performance in the National Championship game. The defenders from Florida that he faced are that fast and dangerous in EVERY game in the NFL. Enough said. But someone will end up taking a chance with him.
It also depends on what "kind" of QB fits the best in a particular NFL team's offense. If you have a pass-oriented offense you're not going to pick up a "rushing" QB...and vice versa. It also depends on what everybody does in the NFL Combine this week.
There are a lot of factors taken into consideration. And NFL teams talk to everyone down from the college coaches to the athletic trainers/medical staff about a player, so sometimes an issue comes up that may not be publicized. What we do know is that he had some trouble in previous years, so that gets looked at too. Also, NFL recruiters come to NCAA practices and watch these guys in practice well before the combine. So they may see something in a guy that they don't like in a situation like that, that the public is not aware of.
There's much more to it then you think.

Troy Smith is a Heisman Trophy winner in college football, this doesn't mean he is the best player in college football, it just states he was the MVP of the year. College has all kinds of different styles and systems and they work well in college, but dont translate in the NFL as its a whole new world.
Look at the past 10 heisman trophy winners and see how they panned out. Only 3 maybe 4 you can say made it to what people expected. The rest never made it and some never played in a regular season game.
Bush Leinart Palmer Woodson the rest were nothing, but were great in college and deserved to be Heisman winners due to their program and how they played.

smith's size plays a big factor. plus just because u win the heisman doesnt make u a lock to be a high draft pick or a star in the league. the trophy goes to the player that has the best season. but sometimes having the best season can be attributed to the system that u are playing in which better utilizes ur talent.
remember gino toretta and danny wuerrfel won the heisman also.

Although he is the hiesman winner, his success is due to the teammates around him.Without his offensive linemen he would be nothing. It could be because several of the latest hiesman winning Quarterbacks failed as starters.

First the hiesman is a popularity contest and doesn't mean you will be a good NFL player let alone a great one. Second he is considered short to be an NFL QB.

At this factor, Oakland or Detroit could have the #a million usual %. ... and Troy Smith would be taken on the ideal. the two team ought to apply a sturdy rookie QB to rebuild their team around, and Troy Smith might fit in the two scheme somewhat properly.

He is a slightly above average player, that was on a perfect team. The players around him made plays, got open, made good blocks, and could catch the ball. Look at Jason white he sucked, had 2 bad knees and he won the Heisman. Where is he now?
