I always feel really embarrased when people clap and I just want to crawl under my seat and hide.

They're just trying to get circulation back in their hands after being cramped in those tiny seats with their elbows jabbed into their own sides so they don't touch their neighbor.

Maybe they're just trying to burn up excess energy? Remember, they've been pigging out on candy and sodas all through the film!

I clap when I get done watching a movie that I thought was good, I clapped when I went to see A Night at the Museum, so did everyone else that watched it.. It was a good movie.. No shame in clapping..

Might be weird, but who gives a flying f*ck?..

Eww. please dont crawl under your seat, there is people's old gum. LOL. Anyways, i think they clap to show that they are satisfied and liked the movie. Or maybe because they are so used to clapping at the end of performances, like you would at a play or something.

Wow!! PDA's probably throw you into convulsions, huh? Don't worry I doubt your opinion of a movie (or the audience) will make or break it, but don't hold other people back from showing their enthusiasm. If you're ready to crawl under the seats, more power to you (have a snack while you're down there). You could just leave though and have your fit away from the people who are enthusiastic about their entertainment (and probably life in general). It might do you good to express yourself once in awhile.

I think its weird too. Yeah, people clap at the end of a performance.. because it's live. So the people/actors can hear it and appreciate it. You don't clap at the end of every show.. I don't get it either.

ahh..the ole embarrassed by us Americans enthusiasm for what we appreciate question! When you have invested money and time in a movie and it gives you pleasure and is awesome, we just have to clap or laugh or exclaim.."That was a hell of a show!" Personally..if I go to a movie and all is quiet afterwards..that is a sure sign it stunk! So..just be prepared to either leave early before the malee or ignore the audience responses.

That's silly for you to feel that way. They think it's a good movie, so they clap. That's what people do at the end of a good performance.

Why are YOU embarrassed when OTHER PEOPLE clap?

It's a common and traditional way for an audience to demonstrate their approval of a performance. It's a little different in the context of motion pictures, since (obviously) the performers can't hear/acknowledge the applause...but I think it's no less valid. It's the audience sharing with each other their need to respond to a performance.

Why should you feel embarrassed? Nobody is requiring you to participate.

Why do people cry during a movie, or laugh, or cheer Rocky on during a fight scene? Because they FEEL something. If the experience has moved you enough to clap, by all means do it. It feels good!
