since you are a beginner, there are a lots of things.

There are two types of work outs.

1. Mass gaining workouts
2. Body toning workouts

mass gaining workuts are done with more weights and less reps. and keeping on increasing the weights. The idea is to create more muscles in your body which can list the weight and do the work. This is the type of work out in which you gain weight.

The secong type of workout is toning. Thats is, if you are already having a broad and big bogy, and you need to chisel cut those muscles, you keep the weights same but increase the number of reps. Thats will eventually make your muscles ripped and chisel cut.

Normally what slender people do is, they do mass training first and gain weight. once they have mass on their body, they shape it and tone it down.

And train under an instructor or an experienced friend as a beginner. Never do it alone. Becuase injuries and faults are part of weight training...you should have someone who should know well how to deal with it. And If you are doin exercise on a muscle do it to complete exhaustion. Then the muscle needs around 24 hours to rebuild. So dont think that exercising the same muscle everyday will give you better results. train alternate muscles...like hands shoulder & chest one day, abs back and legs on the second, then again the hands shoulder and the chest.

its perfectly okay to give your body a rest once in a week....say sunday.

Good luck...have fun.

A simple way, very effective, which does not even involve the gym is to do some press-ups and sit-ups every day. I have no time in the morning, or through the day, so I now do about 50 sit-ups, and 40 press-ups a day, and it is really good. Press-ups and sit-ups are the best for building up visible stomach muscle and arm muscle. The most important thing is to get into a routine, otherwise you will only do the work out every couple of days or so. For example, I always do my sit-ups and press-ups just before my shower, that way I always remember. Start of with maybe just 5 press-ups every evening, and 10 sit-ups, then do about 1 or 2 more each day, and soon you will have built up some pretty good muscle!!
good luck
ps your gym will also have good stuff, but i do not go to one, and you should ask someone, maybe a trainer to advise you what to do in the gym

Here is a great workout plan for beginners that is specifically designed to give you mass (just ignore all the advertising for their products - they are a waste of money):

The only supplements you can buy that do actually work are protein powder and creatine - outside of this, don't follow the hype.

Try to pack in the food as well (good foods) and make sure to push yourself in the gym after the 3rd week.

Power lifting. Heavy weights for mass and light weights for cuts. Workout your chest and arms on monday and thursday and your legs on tuesday and friday. Rest on Wednesday and the weekends. Drink protein shakes for additional mass and buy some amino acids. Incorporate lean protein into your diet.

Eat carbohydrates before the workout and proteins after, I think. To put on bulk workout with lots of weight and few repetitions.

Ask a trainer for a plan. You can never go wrong with crunches and sit-ups and push-up.

most reputable gyms give you one or two free sessions with a personal trainer so you can tell them your goals and they can instruct you on which machines to use and how to use them properly.....
