My dad is Jamacian and Dominican and he has a strong accent and we talk in our accents at home. I love my accent but it always pops up when I get angry or sad.

It's because it is part of your mental image of yourself. Let me explain please. You have been raised by a parent whom he himself spoke with the native tongue from whence he came from. When you were born and being raised by him, you yourself picked up on his linguistic palette. Now, when in public and surrounded by others, you speak as they do because that's what they do. Yet, when you are feeling very emotional, you revert back to your own personal dialect because of how deeply into yourself you have been touched emotionally.(think inner child if you will, but in a good way) This isn't a bad thing at all! Don't be ashamed of it! Live your life, not someone else's!

Well I am not sure what a Jamaican Dominican accent sounds like, but that accent is what you are most comfortable with, obviously. Honey when you are angry a good Jamaican accent really expresses your steam. It is a nice that you have an accent that you didn't go to school hearing as your main accent. You most have spent a lot of time around your dad, which is nice. But nuh worry nuff a wi love chat dat way, when wi bringle su nu watch nu face. Just tek it easy. At the end of the day you will always have a bit of your dad with you.

My Virginia south pops up when I'm impassioned too (haven't been back since I was 10, I', 31). I have a Bahamian accent, so imagine the surprise of my peers when Southern fire comes out.

I think that accents are deeply rooted and we learn to speak without them. So when we return to a baser (more emotional state) we loose our higher levels of control and switch back to them. I'm not basing this on research. But whenever I get angry all my friend's say that my "lawng eyeland" accent comes out. it's haaarrible.

You tend to think impulsively when your angry. Consequently you dont think the words you say and your accent comes out.

My parents do the same thing, except they start speaking in their native tongue. I guess it's natural to express yourself in the language you know best.
